The US and Britain waited out the battle of Stalingrad (and other costly battles) because they wanted Russia to be weakened in the aftermath. This, despite the agreement the Allies (including Stalin) had made to attack the Germans from both fronts. Stalingrad was catastrophic for the Nazis, and allowed the US to waltz into Normandy and trounce a German army that was (as a result) significantly under-fortified because what was left of the Third Reich at that point.
The US betrayed Russia. The US then bombed Japan, and took credit for winning the war. Russia has resented us ever since, but not because of our freedoms. They resent us because Eisenhower allowed Churchill to convince him to first fortify British colonial interests before entering France on May Day, and to let the Russians fight the most important battles (including the single most important battle) of WWII on their own.
The US was simply not a part of what legitimately won WWII. Compared to Russia, we were the cleanup crew.
The Russians had over 1 million dead, wounded, or missing from Stalingrad alone. We owe them our freedom for it. They had 10 million military deaths in total. The US didn't even have 1/20th of the casualties, yet we claim to be the "heroes" of WWII.
