RE: the return of the NBA

If it was just about this season then sure... but the players will lose about $650M... the teams will lose money too because they can't fulfill their tv deals and they can get their money back (70 games is the magic number).

If the tv deals fall through the league can recooperate some money by doing Force Majeure and the players will have to give back some dough. Not only that it will dissolve the current CBA and the players will need to re-negotiate a new CBA. Owners likely don't have fans in the stands so they may not make money next year... so they will be motivated to sit the season out or make a killer deal.

This end of season tournament is important if we want to watch basketball sometime in the next 18 months.

Never realized so much money was riding on this. Considering this, though not a good situation for anyone, it seems they have little choice if what you are saying is accurate.

It’s the nuclear option but it’s viable if the players decided not to report... owners would be partly sheltered from blame.

I think Davis made a good argument for playing. But will it play out the way he thinks it will, the NBA putting the money it makes into the black community?

If more players followed the model that LeBron has provided, the money would be going to a good place. He has built an empire and has used his wealth to push for change in his communities. He's done more during his time as a player than MJ has done his entire life during and after playing. And MJ is a billionaire....LeBron is building schools. That's about the best way to improve your community for long term improvements.

As for owners, they need to #1 make sure they work together to provide the product. Look at MLB, they cant figure it out. If the NBA product succeeds, the players get paid at the highest rate possible and then their communities see improvements. It goes without saying that the owners should do their own to use their original source of wealth to improve the community. They aren't wealthy because the NBA.

They should also plan with the players and allow the players to show support of BLM without repercussions…

Also, Lebron catches so much ****... dude has been a great ambassador to the game, an amazing father, and has done a ton in the community. All while being in the brightest of spotlights since he was a teenager. He's so impressive man... that's why I give him the benefit of the doubt on the China debacle. I've always been a fan and never got the hate. Love watching that guy play. I hate the Lakers but honestly I'm cool with them winning a title. They way I like to think of it is that the true Laker truthers are secretly anti-Lebron because of their Kobe worship.

He is one of those guys that is smart, for his peer group at least, but thinks he is way way smarter than he actually is.
That is probably a good way to put it... smartest man in the room syndrome.

Matt Barnes had a quote about him today... basically stop your ********. I loved Perkins quote yesterday... about not talking about being willing to do something... if you are willing then just friggin do it. I think guys have him figured out now.

Here is one thing that kinda concerns me about the return specifically as it relates to the Jazz.

I think DM is pretty concerned about his extension... Locke seems to have indicated he might be worried about injury... DM's quote on the insurance was mentioned... I wonder if we see him be cautious or possibly sit out. I get it... its generational money, so he needs to take care of himself. It kinda bummed me out that it could be possible.

You listen to Barnes and Stephen Jacksons podcast? It's pretty good. They get the NBA guys to open up about the inside stories. Fairly entertaining.
I always liked those guys... except when we had to play them. The language might be too much for me... half the time my kids are around. I've liked Barnes on the jump and other ESPN stuff. They are straight shooters.

Alright so we find out in the next week who is and isn't playing. I think there is a legit chance that DM doesn't play... would lose 8.5% of his salary (not sure if playoff games are factored in). So he'd lose $300k... signing like a $150M contract in the offseason is likely more important than trying to sneak out of the first round with our hobbled team.

Why do you think there's a legit chance he doesn't play? Anything beyond what we know?

Just the tea leaves... He has more to lose and it is a major inconvenience. The monetary penalty in his case is minor. He brought up the insurance question on the players call.... Ed brought up his contract in his comments.... I just think its kinda out there.

I won't blame him if he chooses to not play. Losing $400K (less after taxes) isn't a big deal... I think he probably wants to play and its a bad look if he doesn't play... but it might be a smart move.

There has also been credible reporting that some players from non-contending teams just aren't that excited to be quarantined to a hotel for 6-8 weeks just to be sent home.

I'm curious if Joe decides to play... if we don't have Bojan and then we lose one other rotation piece (to injury or opt out) the team is basically 12 games and out.

At least we will have good hotel advantage.

This is probably the best time the Jazz need to take advantage of the situation imho. It'd be nice if none of our players don't sit out and try to win a championship, even though we have to 'make do' without Bojan. I know other teams will surely take advantage of this after knowing who's going to stay out and not compete. The Fakers and the Rockettes would probably bring all their key players back and make a run at the championship.

If we win the championship, then there’s no parade. Instead, we can do why LA did when they won the title and just riot. Because parades aren’t safe.
