The supreme confidence that people have about the cultural value of New York—even in a place like Los Angeles, which is stuffed full of super talented people—astounds me. It’s a real testament to the weird staying power of myths.

I feel like I witnessed the demise of a city’s cultural value—a demise similar to what happened earlier in NYC—in my relationship to SF. I started going there quite a bit in the late 90s and was absolutely charged-up by the place. It’s now a douchey shadow of its former self. I literally do not want to go there. And yet some people think it’s dope as ever. I’ll take a hard pass on the culture bred by high finance, real estate values, and tech.
That’s funny. Up until a couple years ago, I hadn’t been to San Francisco since the late 90s. We were originally from the Bay Area, though we left when I was young. I took my wife and three of our (5) kids and was anticipating showing them some bizarre stuff and anticipated seeing a lot of strung out people. Literally nothing. Saw nothing weird. I think maybe one person who was strung out. It was crazy that it wasn’t crazy. A few months later we drove through Portland on our way to Washington. Went downtown to eat. Saw way more of 1990s San Francisco in 45 minutes in Portland than we saw in 3-4 days in SF.

When were you there?
The reason I ask is because it's gotten exponentially worse in the last 2 years. Like, unbelievably worse.

I lived in Portland for a year. I swear even the street layout is like it was done by someone hallucinating on mushrooms or something. The whole city is nuts.

For the first time today, i spent half my shift in full PPE, next step is the beekeepers suit. ****ing uncomfortable and hot wearing that **** over 6kgs of body armor. This is my new working day.

Spent the first hour of my shift sourcing PPE for my guys, still nothing provided by management so im forced to steal the **** off other departments. Our job is hard enough without having to struggle for the basic **** to keep us safe. If i quit my job i could move back to my folks house after two weeks i wouldnt have to pay rent or work and id be 150 dollars a week worse off. Thats looking pretty attractive right now.

Doesn't sound fun. Good luck!

In an interview today, it’s pretty clear that Trump is quasi-blaming everyone else. Look at this word salad:

"I don't agree with the statement that if everybody wears a mask everything disappears," Trump said. "Dr. Fauci said don't wear a mask, our Surgeon General, terrific guy, said don't wear a mask. Everybody was saying don't wear a mask. All of a sudden everybody's got to wear a mask, and as you know, masks cause problems too, with that being said, I'm a believer in masks. I think masks are good."

Every day is a matter of getting through your shift. Morale is abysmal. We still haven't been supplied with enough PPE which is a major point of anxiety for everyone.

Im thinking of starting a diary, tracking it back to the start of this. Friends of mine are sick or have now been put in contact isolation from their families. i've been living in isolation more or less from mine since march, i've seen my parents 3 times since I moved out and before COVID I was their carer.

This is disingenuous from Trump, as Fauci only said that because of the shortage of personal protective equipment at the time.

Like April! Next April! Or the April after that?! LOL.

It could be April, it could be June, I love June, I got married in June, beautiful month, but I’ll tell you this, and I’ll only say it once, but one month, and it could be June, could be Monday, but it will disappear and go away and everything will be spectacular. It’s a terrible thing but it will be beautiful when it goes away and everything will be back overnight and we will be itching to go and in full swing of the greatest rebound in the world history of historical worlds.
