Trump's Coup Attempt

On my first break yesterday a guy was watching Tucker on his phone with the volume up to a stupid level.

On my second break Shark Tank ended and CNBC news came on. Another guy who was watching one of the even more extreme "news" sources on his phone, loud enough so that people at other socially distanced tables could hear, started grumbling when Shepard Smith started talking about Trump eventually having to leave the White House, saying distinctly "He ain't going nowhere...grumble grumble."

Yeah, if you're not drinking the kool aid these guys look like a bad joke. If you're swimming in the kool aid apparently this makes perfectly reasonable sense to you. It's working on the people it's intended to work on.

Interesting fact, if you didn't know it: The expression "drinking the Kool-Aid" comes from the Jonestown massacre in 1978, when Jim Jones convinced over 900 members of his cult to commit mass suicide by drinking poisoned grape Flavor Aid from a big metal tub. Women gave it to their own babies, and then watched them die within about 5 minutes as they died more slowly themselves. Absolutely horrific. You hear the expression used all the time, but rarely have I seen a more relevant and fitting parallel than 70+ million American citizens absolutely chugging the proverbial Kool-Aid, all because this fake-tan, greasy-haired used car salesman in an ill-fitting suit has them convinced the other entire half of the country is evil and out to get them.
 
It appears that Trumps legal battles have been massive failures so now he mostly abandoning that route and switching tactics by way of intimidating or bribing electors to go against the will of the people.
Our country has never seen anything like this in its history. Trump is doing whatever he can to stay in power regardless of what the voters want. He is attempting to destroy america and apparently many americans are also wanting our country to get destroyed. Sad sad sad.

I don't always think about Jonestown when I use the term, but I absolutely did this time.

Out of this insane stew, a post inaugural Trump will base his insurgency against Biden. For as long as he wants to play it that way. It will be like a form of mass hysteria orchestrated by Trump, an insurgency rooted in insanity.

I would expect a post inaugural Trump to continue to insist that he is the actual president, and that Biden is illegitimate. I expect his followers to embrace and push that narrative....

And I wouldn’t blame them. What Trump and his supporters are pushing is an end of democracy and the start of autocracy. The GOP has already gotten comfortable with minority rule, where they don’t even win the most votes to win. Now they’re pushing to actively subvert the will of the people.

If that succeeds, then it’s time for (small d) democratically caring states, states that care about voting, will of the people, rule of law, etc to secede from the authoritarian and autocratic caring ones. The south can finally have the autocratic and authoritarian Trumpistan it obviously wants. But that doesn’t mean the rest of us should. I suspect Utah would probably cream itself to be a part of an authoritarian autocracy that pretends to be a reactionary theocracy (is there any other kind?) by abolishing abortion and promoting white patriarchy. So I’d probably have to move. I don’t know how i could afford to live on the coasts. But I don’t want to live where voting and elections don’t matter...

There's always Illinois and Minnesota (depending on how much winter you like).
 
I think what we’re seeing is a much greater crisis than we think. While I think it’ll fail to keep trump in office, I think it’s already utterly succeeding in making Biden a weak and illegitimate president. I think it’s already setting trump, the Christ of white American Evangelicals, up for running in 2024 and having a form of resurrection just like he spent 3 days in walter Reed and resurrected stronger than ever. I think this prolongs his corrosive and vile politics. Half the population now thinks he was “stabbed in the back” this election. And we all know how “stabbed in the back” narratives end.

Lastly, I think the GOP has officially given up on democracy. That’s what’s most scary.

I think the GOP’s largest donors (Kochs, Adelsons, Mercers, etc), its religions (white evangelicals and Mormons), its leaders, and its propaganda have given up on democracy. they got their toes wet with authoritarianism in 2000 when they failed to win the popular vote and relied on the Supreme Court to deliver the EC. They then ran roughshod over the constitution and genuinely felt angry when they lost to a POC in 2008. They immediately delegitimized him and his millions of supporters by claiming he was born in Kenya. They never gave him a chance. And immediately worked to gerrymander and disenfranchise his supporters. That led to the 2010 wipeout. The senate takeover in 2014. And led to stonewalling Merrick Garland in 2016.

The final acts of throwing off democracy came in the 2016 election when mcconnell didn’t allow the public to be properly informed about Russian interference to help Trump win. He threatened obama that he would go public and call it a partisan attack if Obama came out publicly about it. So right there the GOP’s most powerful leader tells you that he no longer cared about the integrity of the election, as long as his side won. His side did win, without the majority of votes, and have seen tax cuts and judges since. He laid bo political price

Since 2016, the GOP has been massively rewarded. Yes, they’ve lost some House seats. But the big donors are happy and they got more voters than ever in this election. Why change course now? If we can overthrow American democracy with 45 percent of the electorate cheering you on then we can keep this party going! More judges and more tax cuts and more donations from billionaires!!!

This has always been an issue with me. I used to really hate winter. Growing up, it was the worst. But now I have a garage. I like having cooler temperatures year round to do more stuff in. I’ve always wanted to visit Minnesota. But i also understand that winters in utah aren’t exactly winters in the upper Midwest.
 
It's insane that such a large part of the country is willing to throw the democratic process that the country was built on in the trash, all for this known con man and grifter and his insane cronies.

But man does it feel good to watch him take L after L in court from judges he himself appointed. As if he thought the world would just bend to his will just because he put someone in their position. All while screaming toothlessly into the Twitter void.

At this point the best hope for our country is for Trump to be convicted of tax fraud and put in prison so that he loses his mouthpiece. It's not likely but if the rule of law is followed it could. Or better yet, he could catch corona again and die.

Or just be old and fat and not getting enough sleep or exercise or nutrition and just die due to those issues.

Southern Illinois gets cool winters, but the summers get into the lower 100s. There's a big range between northern Minn. and southern Ill., temperature-wise.

Jimmy would be the closest to not having committed war crimes. A civilian tanker truck was blown up in Operation Eagle Claw and 44 hostages on a bus that spotted the troops were temporarily taken to avoid troops being discovered (the mission was to rescue hostages held by terrorists, but it was botched and the mission cancelled). Other than that, I don't think he did anything directly.

However, he authorized funding for regimes that did some horrible things, particularly in East Timor in the late 70s. And the shield he provided to a very racist South African regime with the U.N. after they SADF bombers killed over 600 Namibians. This wasn't funding atrocities, but it was making excuses and sheltering them.

The funding he provided to Afghanistan may have some shady actions mixed in, but there is nothing concrete.

I think the U.S. should step back from trying to step in to every other country's problems. The idea to stabilize the world just leaves us more hated.

The Utah Jazz, after 42 long years in SLC with no championship banners and a trail of heartache, beat the Boston Celtics in seven games in 2021. Donovan gives a MVP performance tossing up 35 PPG on 53% shooting as the Jazz outlast the Celtics 106 - 95 at the TD Garden.

Salt Lake goes wild - people dance in the streets and a parade downtown is planned. After years and years of hoping this year would be different, it finally is.

But not so fast.

The Celtics ownership group, Danny Ainge and various leaders of the Celtic front office petition Adam Silver and the league office to overturn the championship. Their reasoning is simple: it's not fair that they lost and that the Jazz have cheated to win game seven and the series as a whole. They point to a clock operator who they don't believe was accurate, a pre-game meal that they believe was tainted by Jazz sympathizers posing as servers and referees who they claim have been paid off with Park City property to swallow their whistles. If that wasn't enough, they also bring into contention games 2, 3 and 5 (won by the Jazz) where they state similar issues of uncalled fouls, faulty court conditions and a myriad of others issues such as poor air quality. Games 1, 4 and 6, all of which were won by Boston, pose no issue to them as this was the correct outcome and isn't in question.

None of the above can be proven with any evidence - Ainge holds multiple press conferences where he spits and sweats and tells of great conspiracies against the Celtics. When pressed for evidence, he simply recites scenes from Hoosiers. Complaint after complaint is investigated by third party arbitrators who can find nothing wrong and ask the Celtics to stop wasting their time.

Finally, Silver calls his own press conference. He decides to award the Celtics the championship because they spent a lot of money building a winning team and collecting assets and there's simply no way they couldn't have won the championship as they tried so darn hard and are just too talented. The Jazz are stripped of the Larry O'Brien trophy and told to try again next year.

And if that sounds insane to you, we're seeing it play out in real life right now.

That sounds great in theory but as we've seen, it just ends up meaning that Trump's strongman buddies get a free reign to do whatever they want.

I'm not suggesting the US should go around overthrowing regimes and invading countries, but without at least the threat and possibility of action, lots of crappy stuff will go on around the world. I can tell you that from personal experience of Yugoslavia's break up.

Everyone minding their own business is great if you're a country hoping to deal with someone harshly and quickly. It sucks if you're Rohingya, or Armenian, or Palestinian.

But we spend more on foreign aid than any other country. Let everyone step up a bit.
