look, I like udoka a lot more than TB, he’s more athletic longer, stronger, probably better in every way except shooting and ft’s, but you can’t just brazenly say you know for sure he’s ready to contribute right away, also since he’s going to be Rudy’s backup, if he does becom a quality player he will leave as soon as he can so he can play more min and make more money. Essentially we drafted and developed him for another team. There’s a reason teams with star centers don’t draft centers in the first round let alone reach for a second round center in the first. It’s a waste of money and team building.

Udoka is Tony Bradley just like Kosta Boom Bitches is just like Rudy Gobert. I mean, sure they have different sizes, athleticism, and roles. But you know, they're the same.

One of the main reasons why I like Udoka is that he should be able to come in and give us quality Gobert like mins. Never in a game will the lane be open and always will our center be a lob threat. I think that's a real advantage, not disadvantage. Everyone is trying to emulate the Warriors and Rockets. I don't think that's a wise strategy for the Jazz. Their size is an advantage not disadvantage. As stated before, he's not going to be asked to do anything that he wasn't already doing at an elite level for 4 years in Kansas. It just seems like people are inventing new ways to dislike the pick.

Wish we had taken a swing at one of those millions of wings that were available in the late first round? Okay, I can see an argument to be made there. But all these comparisons to Bradley or claiming "he's not ready" are just lazy excuses to not like the pick. They're certainly not based on reality or reason. Just bitterness and the inability to actually articulate which wing would've been a better fit. My thinking is that most fans don't even know which wing would've been a better fit. They just don't like we took a center in the first round.

We just used a pick for our backup in three years... unless there is an injury but guess what happens if Favs or Rudy get hurt?

@infection why don’t you tell him what will happen if our rotation players get hurt and management sees we will have to play a guy with no nba experience.
 
It’s so quiet in this thread... should we freeze it for three years until the kid gets some playing time... his vert should be like 200 inches by then.
 
I’m shocked that @The Thriller hasnt been in here gloating after how he so clearly nailed what was going on with the Udoka pick and how brilliant it is to draft the backup center of the future 3 years early.
 
DL has learned nothing. He drafted TB when we had Favors and Gobert... and signed Udoh. Then picked up his option because we didn’t know what we had. Then he packages him with another asset and sends him out, all so he can create room for the next guy buried on the bench after he inks Favors to a 3-year deal.

One of his focus' leading up to the draft was losing weight. Hmmm. He also wants to improve his ball handling, FT shooting and get a jump shot. Sounds like a big hill to climb for a 44% FT shooter. I wonder what he improved year on year?



“We felt at the end of the day (that) Dok was the best defensive player and the best player available given his production and unique attributes,” said Utah general manager Justin Zanik in a Zoom call with Utah media following the draft. “That ruled the day. That unique talent won out.”

Added assistant GM David Morway: “His lateral quickness is unique for a man his size. It’s important for us to have a big who can cover a lot of space with his length and his feet. It’ll take him awhile to adjust, but he has the ability to do that. He’s an extremely competitive big, and he wants to get better. And he has — he’s improved something every year. That’s something that stood out to us.”

Azubuike also joined the Utah media for a Zoom call after he was drafted Wednesday night, and, according to the Salt Lake Tribune, he told them his focus leading up to the draft had been on improving his ball-handling, extending his jump shot out to 15 feet, improving his consistency on free throws and losing weight."

Were is super smart @The Thriller to get his flowers for how smart he was in determining this great pick who will clearly play backup center this year lolz... and now super smart DL also got Favs to be his backup.

I think it’s a good pick if we don’t sign Favors. My beef regarding Favors is he’s not nearly as good of a rim protector as cheaper replacements like Udoh. And I think he could have done some of that. But this will be about as worthless as having Udoh behind both Favors and Gobert.

I saw the endgame immediately though and the lolz from other people assuming we would play this kid from day one were hilarious. If you thought we were going to play a rookie at this rotation spot from day one you haven’t paid attention to how our front office and coaching staff work.
 
We must have planned on getting Favors before drafting Udoka. So he's insurance for Favors or Rudy getting an injury until he becomes a bench player behind Derrick when we trade Rudy. Otherwise why make him such a priority?

And I am super in on the Favs reunion. We have him we win the nuggets series... full stop. I was pretty meh on the wings in FA... none of them felt worth the MLE... so I thought draft a couple wings or a pg prospect and a wing. They might pick up 10 minutes a night but in 1-2 years we need a Joe or Mike replacement... maybe you strike gold and get something good. A young wing with promise on a rookie deal also becomes an amazing trade asset. It’s a cant lose. Then we take Udoka. I knew we’d bring in a vet so I just face palmed immediately.

Yeah, I don’t think the free agent wings were that great. I guess that even though I know better, I had hoped that at least one of our three GMs would see the very obvious OPJ for MC deal, especially considering OPJ was once one of DL’s ‘guys.’
 
We always seem to play the safe bet. Mike Conley is a perfect example. You know he's not going to suck but for the money he was never going to pan out. I would have taken a chance on Jaden McDaniels. He has a great looking shot, a quick release, good FT % and moves nicely. Maybe he turns into a Brandon Ingram, maybe not, but if he does he will be a draft pick who outplays his draft position. How many guys have we drafted over the last 30 years who have outplayed their draft position? Rudy has. Millsap. Who else?
 
I'm starting to warm up to the idea of Udoka. He's the biggest, baddest dunking machine I've seen probably since Shaquille O'Neale, and he seems to be pretty good at playing in pick-and-roll. He's got decent timing, catches well, gathers and can finish in a few different ways. He's much more mobile than, say, a Roy Hibbert, who got run out of the league.

He needs to keep himself in shape and figure out how to get his FTs up to 60% or so if he can.

Jazz took BPA. You never know what happens. Rudy or Favors might tear an ACL.

Anyone the Jazz took had a low shot at any minutes. The Jazz are trying to win a ring and dudes picked in the 20's typically dont get any minutes.

A lot of bitching and moaning, but I believe in the potential of the pick. Maybe it amounts to nothing, but at least we still have Elijah Hughes.
