Rational CoViD-19 Discussion Thread: Science vs. Politics

I got very sick in November 2019 while traveling, with all the covid 19 symptoms. I couldn't drive. My wife came and got me, with my daughter to drive my car home. I don't know what it was. A lot of people were talking about the bad flu that year.

Scientists are reporting an earlier date for the outbreak than Wuhan in December.

Of course.

And you could do this post any day, a thousand times a day, every day for years...... and it would not be anything the owners cared to suppress.

It's practically Demagogue Party Policy..
Why would anyone suppress it? You do realizes that it says vacations rather than vaccinations right?

Don't worry. Covid is a hoax

My wife and kids just walked in from a huge family gig at somebody's missionary farewell.

The news is, Nov. 2020 bil "L" family got covid. All of them. they didn't know it then, when they hosted alot of folks including my wife and kids for thanksgiving dinner. I didn't go. So my fam all got esposed to Covid, but we all got sick in Nov 2019 when I got sick.

If anyone is into some next level trolling, post this on your Facebook page and watch the triggered comments roll in.

I take that completely at face value. I feel that way, in all earnestness. I think we need to provide 4 weeks of vacation per year, paid, with at least 2 weeks required. It would be such a boon to our workers, and we will see the gains in productivity, creativity, and loyalty in the workplace. Businesses will see decreased turnover and increased profits as a result. Companies that believe that vacation time (or PTO, whatever you want to call it) is just a drain on the company just completely do not get it.

I use my vacation every year. It helps me stay balanced and more effective at work. I think everyone should use their vacation time and not just sit on it, unless it rolls over from year to year and you are saving it to take in one big chunk. But even then, the point is to use the time to recharge and get yourself right in your head, then come back to work more creative and productive. I am for it, if you can't tell.

I always cash out 40 hours each year.
But I still take lots of vacation time. I get 256 hours so it's not a big deal to cash out 40 hours for Christmas money.

Thinking about this, the fact that the ruse was to substitute vacations where most skimming readers would expect vaccinations, my joking reply that such an edict would of course be expected on the "Demagogic Party Platform" was right on anyway.

Please don't mention this idea to Biden. He might think it's a good idea......

I was trying to read that first sentence as

"I take that at farce value...."

However, there are companies that do this sort of thing, maybe not on that scale. Some company policies simply do not let workers accrue vacation time beyond some fixed number of hours or days.

In general, this is a fine thing for most companies to consider. It improves their employee relations and hiring opportunities. Most workers might pass over this deal for a higher basic wage, but it is always something that will be considered.

The problem is in America there is this pervasive attitude that taking time off work makes you a slacker and is seen as a stigma. In my last role I had a supervisor come to me who hadn't had any time off in 2 years (I checked), and had maxed out her PTO at 5 weeks per company policy. I could tell she was checking my attitude about time off, as her new manager, and I enthusiastically told her to take the time she needed. We arranged 3 days here, 2 days there, and then a week off later. It was all covered by other leadership, as I always make sure my team has backup coverage. So after her 2 days off, 4 weeks later she was off on a Wednesday-Friday stint, and a higher level manager came in and asked me where she was. I told him she is on vacation. His response? "What the hell, she just had a week off [um it was 2 days moron], how much time does she have to take? Doesn't she know she is needed and this won't look good taking so much time off so close together?" I was flabbergasted, but unmoved, and I let him know he could take that attitude and opinion and shove it (of course in a professional and compassionate way). I pointed out she had gone 2 years without using a single day of PTO, and he bragged he hadn't taken a day off in a year and a half. I closed off the conversation, because frankly I am the boss so he can really and truly shove it.

But we live in a society where this is a point of bragging rights. This is hardly an isolated incident as well. This has happened a lot in almost every work place I have been in. If you use your vacation time you are viewed as a slacker. It is a load of **** and really needs to change in America. And I can affect it where I am so I do, but it is a societal thing. Even those companies that tried offering "unlimited" time off ended up using bullying tactics to shame people into never taking as much as a day, let alone the 4-week sabbaticals everyone dreamed of. This vilification of wanting to have a work-life balance needs to ****ing end.

I've had a job, off and on across some 20yrs. Each time I left I had to start at the bottom in paid leave. I think management there is horrible, fitting and exceeding your worst depictions. But they don't go broke, and they've never said no to me coming back.

But besides that, most of my life I've worked when I wished/could/wanted and otherwise enjoyed my life one way or another. I'm not one for formal vacations, but I enjoy all the travel I do and all the people I meet doing that. Hardly a town in California I haven't been to.

My wife thinks I'm a slacker, but the work she sees is when she lets me come in again.
