Clearly the Republican party's response to their White House loss in 2020 is to suppress the vote harder. I think that in Georgia, in particular, the Republicans already in office there felt like the tide was against them and the answer they came up with was to suppress the vote harder. Since that is what has allowed them to stay relevant in that state over the last few decades they figured they'd go back to the well and just have another drink of that sweet sweet voter suppression. Make the voters in "certain neighborhoods" stand in lines for a full day and let's see how much they really care about voting.

Thing is, I think they ****ed up this time. I think they ****ed up real bad.

There was nothing subtle about this being about reducing black democrats from voting. I think we'll see an equal and opposite effort to get the black vote out in Georgia and an energized voter base that is not going to stand for this. Not anymore!

This was clearly a bridge too far.

Oh and iirc they made it illegal to give food or water to the people standing in the long lines.

I think there is some more specific guidelines, basically that a campaign can't give food or water, but that let's say the local church actually can, or the local sandwich shop can as long as they are not involved directly in a campaign. I'm not 100% though.

I don't know what it's like to stand in line for hours and hours to vote. The longest I've ever stood in line was somewhere around 15-30min for a democratic primary in 2020 where I voted for Warren. Other than that I've voted by mail in recent years or I've waltzed on up like a VIP and voted just as fast as my stubby little legs and stubby little fingers would allow.

I'm 44 years old, I've voted in almost every election I've been allowed to vote in and I've never had to stand in line. Why is it that people in minority urban communities in Georgia have to stand in line for hours and hours, sometimes 12 hours, so that they can vote? There's no technical reason. There's no vote security reason. There's only one reason, to make it hard so that these people don't vote.

If you're in favor of that then I think you're anti-American. You're anti-patriotic. You're basically an all around bad person. I wish you'd move to Russia or Myanmar so you could enjoy the fruits of your anti-democratic labor.

I hope so.

The new Georgia law gives the state legislature the ability to overturn an election. If the presidential election were held today, there’s a very good chance Georgia’s red legislature would overturn the results of the election in favor of Trump.

Anyone else see a problem with giving a state legislature the power to overturn the results of an election?

This a great article that goes along with this thread:

As for giving people in line food and/or water:

Are people banned from giving water to voters?

There's been criticism of a provision which bans some people from handing out food or water to voters within a certain distance of polling sites.

It's true that the rules on this have been tightened.

In previous elections, voting rights groups have often given out supplies to people standing in long lines at voting locations.

But Republicans have pushed back on claims that the new law criminalises giving water to voters.

Although poll workers are still allowed to give away water, other people will have to follow certain restrictions under the new regulations.

The law makes it an offence to give away food or water within 150 feet of a polling place or within 25 feet of any voter in line.

Violations can be punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Yeah, that's ****ed up. You were right.

I welcome a counter point... Good luck on that.

Of course it's not news that I'd think this is nonsense.

18 days of in-person voting, including two Saturdays. Probably not a real "line" crisis.

The GA law, according to the R and Trump marginal press reports, where they actually get Gov. Kemp on their programs, alreading forgetting his mistakes in 2020, praising him for his other successes, claims that the election workers will will have provisions for water and toilets in line, likely with EMTs not far off. They have permitted increased voter drop boxes with cam and officer security. Campaign supporters can set up their tables 151 ft away from the lines anywhere they want, with refreshments and campaign lit.

GA law is much more voter friendly than NJ or CO now. Yes you need a drivers license or state-issued ID number, but they are free and they'll come to your house and give it you. I think they will still mail you a ballot if you request one, but no general every address on the books mailer with no chain of custody record. It sound s good to me.

Straying so far off the facts hurts the cred of any cause, bro.

Of course mass media domination with any narrative/political line is a well-known method with many" successes" on the books. Just not the kind of success people will think is a "good" final solution. Nothing is ever settled until ordinary people regain their fundamental rights and the most importanct influence in their government.

That's why I say progressivism/statism/corporatism will ultimate fail and go down in history as the wrong way to lead.

Maybe I'll get a link to the law and post it.

It's all ridiculous. The MLB has moved the all star game from Atlanta to Denver now in retaliation, punishing the minority businesses in Atlanta to the tune of 100 million estimated. Now the largely white population (81%) of Denver will reap the rewards. When private entities start trying to dictate politics like this, and end up screwing things up worse, you know the country is spiraling down.

Voter suppression IS NOT politics. It is abuse. It is anti-American and anti-democratic. All people who care about the U.S. should stand up against voter suppression, including businesses.

If the only way for you to stay in power is to suppress votes you shouldn't be in power.

Very nice of you to spout the GOP talking points.

I look at the idea of voter suppression the same way I look at voter fraud. Neither of these two things have a significant or material impact on election results. They both might very well exist, but it's not making a difference in elections.

Go on a conservative message board and you will read comments from a lot of idiots suggesting that the Democrats are trying to steal elections by allowing non-citizens and dead people to vote. I see the same thing here, just on the opposite side of the isle.

Voter fraud, any kind, which diminishes the value of a real voter's vote, is voter suppression too.

There is a clear need to establish the value of each voter's vote, and eliminate every kind of abuse of elections.

The issue here is the values of some people who believe in open borders as equivalent of worldwide voter rights. In the mix are people who don't care about the fact that many other countries don't have voter rights, many other rights, opportunities. However you feel about those people, the answer can't be to destroy human rights here.

Competing models of governance. The press for management convenience/control worldwide is essentially a top-down dictatorship no matter what politics the top dogs claim. It's no different if were Trump, if that was the outcome.

The historic success model is the federalism concept embraced in the United States Constitution, where powers to the central government are defined, and many other powers specifically left in State or local control. This model enhances the value of citizens, diminishes the moolah trains available to corruption on the national or global level, and it reduces the opportunities for local misgovernment/corruption as well because there is a higher judicial power they cannot so easily buy out.

There will never be a substitute for individual responsibility.

The laws should absolutely protect every voter's vote and the value of that vote.

Yeah, it's a good thing we have voter fraud very much under control. So now is not the time to suppress votes in ways that does nothing to make voting more secure. Now is the time to increase access to these secure means of voting.

I'm sure you realize there are like half of Americans who just roll their eyes at statements like this.

The social media and mainstream news, and federal agencies have all lost serious ground in the minds of millions of Americans.

If I turned alley cat and drug in that smelly old fish, the GA law itself would you read it before making false statements about it. better yet, would you join in calling out the false media claims about it?

I sorta don't think you'd get past the "Look what that damn cat dragged in" response.
