Jazz Offseason Plan

I'm still sad the rockets got Christian wood for Trevor Ariza, a 1st, a 2nd, and cash. He would be an excellent fit for us

that's why i said we overpaid for them both, not trying to argue who's overpaid more. i'd say they both should go.
You don't just dump a rookie salary before you even know what you have in that player. Only way you move Udoka is if another team values him enough that you can package him with #30 to move up into the teens in the draft.

Dump Favors salary. Play Udoka as your backup traditional C. Bring in someone who can play as a small ball 5. Those are the only moves involving the Center position that need to be made this offseason.

Rookie salary gets dumped all the time, especially when you are on the brink of paying the LT. Dumping Favs contract is better but tougher to execute because you don't just get rid of your fan favorite/loyal service to the franchise for nearly 10 years. And as underwhelming as Favs contract stands, you will have to throw in picks to make it happen also, which would make the team look really bad.

Also, as a playoff team you don't play a rookie with concerning injuries as your backup center just to find out what you have. Why play a rookie who has the chance of maybe one day becoming a decent backup center when you can just go sign a known commodity such as Whiteside or Alex Len. Cheaper and better player. Same argument as Torrey Craig and Oni.

If Doke is Greg Oden or Darko Milicic type of talent, I might’ve agreed. But he is a consensus 2nd round talent taken in the 1st round by surprise. His ceiling is just some backup center in this league that is easily replaceable, that's if he's lucky not to get hurt again or go down the wrong path on his development like Mo Bamba. Teams just don't stick with guys like that for the sake of “seeing what they have”, surely not one trying to compete and win now. Just go grab a proven vet right away.

So Zach Collins just broke his foot again. I'm going to go ahead and say that if DJJ opt in that Portland would trade him for Favs in a heartbeat. Id do it. DJJ is likely a guy that has eternal potential and never realizes most of it. He must have been 16 when he came in the league. He takes the Niang role... maybe some things click. We can use Udoka or find a cheap shooting 5 and play 5 out. Worst case he has value as an expiring deal at the trade deadline.

I always confuse him for Derrick Williams.

Seems plausible. They have Nasir Little waiting in the wings to overtake DJJ minutes. DJJ only played 10 minutes in 2 playoffs games so it signals they arent super about him.

It definitely makes the Jazz worse overall, but he's got one less year on his contract. I'd probably do it.

He's an interesting defender. Gets some steals, blocks, deflections... good transition player. Just turned 24... shot has improved slowly but still not where you'd want it ideally. If he was a 40% 3P shooter he's likely a starter level player on the wing.

I like the logic of this trade, but I just find it hard to live with the fact that kept Favors for so long, then traded him for scraps, then overpaid to re-sign him, only to trade him to dump him within the division.

Its very much a re-arrange the deck chairs... has a slight chance of being something more than that but I'm not holding my breathe.

Yeah well to get something good for a guy you can't overpay him.

that prolly came off like I was being a dick... sorry... it is more a frustration with us giving him more than we should have and not me being sensitive to your comment.

No worries. I completely get it. I agree with you. I hated that we signed him for so much for 3 years. I knew it would end badly.

Did y’all see Cam Reddish come in and play some good minutes last night? Energetic defense on Middleton. 12pts 5rbs on 5/9 to go along with it. 23 minutes. Totally energized the crowd, too.

Apprently it helps to have a stable full of wing defenders.......... instead of a cupboard stocked with traditional Cs.

I know everyone says you draft the best player available... but if whatever metric/model you are using to decide BPA doesn't heavily discount guys who are centers only and can't shoot or playmake... then it is dumb AF. You'd think 5 years or so ago people would have figured this out. Whatever tier you have a traditional center in.. knock them down at least one but probably two tiers and they may be a value at that level.

Unless the can shoot and protect the rim... but those guys are super rare
