What's new

The Biden Administration and All Things Politics

Building a 50 foot wall just means they'll build 50 foot ladders - or do what they are already doing and just going underground.

And the problem is if we deported every single illegal immigrant, our commerce would turn to dust. New construction would be at a standstill and the cost of raw produce would skyrocket.
Well statistically, if I remember right the vast majority of illegals traveled here legitimately. No sneaking needed. Like 75% or more. And a small percentage actually got here by directly crossing the border like jumping a fence. Something like 50% were actual visa overstays, others came to visit and never left.

No matter how you twist it, a short section of tall wall is going to virtually nothing to stop anyone except maybe Cletus.

It's the equivalent of paying billions to plug a pin-hole in your dam when someone left the flood-gates wide open.

No they don't. I live in a border city that has a wall and that didn't happen. Our wall was built during the Clinton era and the effect it had on the crime rate is hard to understate. San Diego is one of the safest big cities in the United States while Tijuana is one of the most dangerous places on Earth that isn't in the middle of a war. Prior to the Clinton-era wall going up, the crime rates of the 2 cities was almost identical.

There are coyotes and drug runners that caravan out into the desert to the east where the more substantial barrier ends and gives way to regular fencing, but there are no 50 foot ladders being used. They do find tunnels every few years but even those are rare due to all the seismic sensors and microphones that detect digging.

The 50 foot ladder analogy is more of a metaphor that a physical barrier will simply be overcome by another physical barrier of equal presence. I'm not suggesting that they're running through the desert with 50 foot ladders as the wall isn't that high.

A true border strategy goes beyond simply building a big thing but rather supports big thinking. And it's something that can't even be accomplished in one administration but the collective effort of many years.

Biden maybe “only” have a 56 percent approval right now. That’s still 6+ pts higher than Trump ever had.

I know that no one here would ever regret voting for Biden in the general election, but I'm wondering about the Primaries. Is there anyone who voted for Joe Biden in the primaries that now thinks a different Democrat should have been selected to head the Democrat ticket?

I didn't vote for him in the primaries.
In fact he was almost dead last of the legitimate choices for me. (bloomberg was dead last)
I think he sucks. He is WAY too old. I think there should be an age limit of 65 years old to be able to run for president.

I’m not registered to a party but if I would have voted in the primary, I would have cast it for Elizabeth Warren.

I feel like none of the candidates wanted to be seen as punching down on the old guy. Bernie Sanders had a die-hard base. Elizabeth Warren was whip smart and also had some appeal to the more progressive side of the party. Kamala Harris ticked a lot of intersectional boxes and came from the electorally huge state of California. All three were legitimate threats, but obviously past-his-prime Biden was just sort of there. Biden coasted through the first part of the campaign unscathed until the war of attrition between the big-3 made Biden inevitable.

She got my vote. Bernie was my second choice (though he too is way too old). I was down with mayor pete and chang as well. Didn't like any of the others.

I voted for Mayor Pete in the primaries. I'm not a Democrat, but they allow independents to vote in their primary in Utah.

Me too (not a democrat but was allowed to vote in the primary)
I wish the republican party would let me vote

I didn't like any of the candidates. Bernie was the only one that I felt was genuine, even though I think his leaning is a bit far, but I do agree with a lot of his positions, just in a more tempered way. Biden at least has a better heart than Trump.

I'm tired of voting for candidates, when a quick look at their records tell me they can't be trusted.

Just wanted to take this moment to instruct everyone once again that a Biden vs. Trump matchup in 2024 would pit an 82 year-old man vs. a 78 year-old one.

Average life expectancy is 77.3 now in the US as Covid knocked down that >1 year.

We can do better.

Trump is working with the owner of Hobby Lobby to search down the Holy Grail, so he just might live forever. Evidently they already have half of the marker that shows where the grail is.

But, can we? This is the result of the inevitable devolution of our 2-party political system. I'm not sure we can do better.

Are you actually me?

Well we know he smokes weed, apparently right before tweeting
Sounds like a great idea. We'll take out all the boats and outlaw them. I'm sure global trade will go off without a hitch. And you didn't want to take that cruise anyway.

Disqualified for being an idiot.
