Trade deadline discussion

On draft night. How do you use them in deals during the season when you don’t have them?
I bet we could have traded joe ingles for 2 2nd round picks. Probably clarkson too. Maybe even butler.

I can show up to 7/11 to buy something, but if I don’t have my wallet, they’re not giving me anything. I can certain get the money. That’s not a problem at all. Of course it’s easy to come up with $5. But unless I’m walking into 7/11 with $5, I’m coming out empty handed.

We just traded Joe Ingles with two second round picks just to offload his salary. A second round pick represents $0 in a deal. It’s not as easy to make deals for second rounders when you’re taking back $10+M in salary.

I see that we used 2nd round picks in a trade just few days ago. So if the jazz wanted holiday and all that was required was two 2nd round picks then it would appear that they could have got holiday. Maybe the jazz didn't want him. Maybe his team didn't want to trade him. Maybe his price was higher. IDK.

I think the Jazz believe that 2nd rounders are easy to pick up when they need them even if they just pay cash.
1. You can’t go to the store and buy picks. Most teams don’t sell their picks, and buyers don’t get to decide how that plays out.
2. Those situations almost always come up on draft night
3. Those picks are not traded for a player (since the team you might send it to for a player could also probably just buy the pick also).
4. Do you think EIGHT 2nd rounders and a lightly protected 1st could get you a real basketball player on the trade market? Cuz that’s what they’ve traded in the last two years to clean up their mistakes.

What if you didn't have the money but then went to the bank and got the money and then went to 7/11. Could you come out of 7/11 with something then? (This is all moot of course because the jazz had the money in this case)

Our two second rounders were spoken for… because we were shopping them to salary dump Ingles.

Incorrect. We traded joe ingles with two second round picks to acquire 2 players.
Is it against league rules to trade joe ingles and 2 second round picks for justin holiday?

I could, but it’s 11 pm on Saturday and the bank is closed. And they don’t have an ATM. They aren’t taking my IOU.

So you are saying that the jazz couldn't salary dump ingles and 2 picks in trade not involving the one we did? That was the only team and players we were allowed to go after with joe ingles expiring and picks? Weird rule but ok.

Yes, because we wanted salary savings more than we wanted Justin Holiday.

I would just go earlier to the one with an atm and use my atm card.

Maybe, maybe not. Literally impossible for you or I to know. I have heard literally hear zero talk about the jazz being interested in justin holiday. I heard they liked harrison barnes though. Is it possible that the jazz didn't want holiday even if he were free and saved us even more money?

I’m saying that our priority was to offload salary. We used our seconds for that. We’re dumping all of our second rounders to drop salary, to the point where we have none left. I used Holiday as an example of how you couldn’t get a guy like that if you wanted if you don’t have the seconds. I’m not necessarily saying that was the move we needed to do. Just giving a recent example on how you hamstring yourself by throwing all these second rounders away and justifying how easy it is to obtain them on draft night.

I can grab a lot of stock in the next market crash, but that doesn’t mean that current market value is that low.

Use the 2nd rounders to find role players? Cant they just buy those if they see a guy they think can be a role player. Doesn't seem like 2nd round picks are super difficult to acquire
“Just buy”?

What pick? From who? For what price? Are you actually willing to spend that money? Is the guy you’re targeting even there? Would the Jazz even necessarily know a pick could be bought?

The reality is these things are super chaotic and a small number of 2nds change hands every year, usually at the back half of the 2nd round.

Read above. Us getting Holiday wasn’t specifically my point. It’s an example of something available that requires you to have the capital.

Alexander-Walker, 23, the 17th overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft who is averaging 12.8 points and 2.8 assists per game and 3.3 rebounds per game, is expected to be a rotation player for the Jazz. He could potentially fill some of the scoring and playmaking void in the second unit caused by Ingles recently suffering a torn ACL. The Jazz believe that Alexander-Walker, who has one season remaining on his rookie contract, will benefit from Utah's developmental program.

Holiday is 32 years old averaging 10.9 points per game and 1.9 asissts and 2.7 rebounds per game.

So NAW averages more points, assists, and rebounds in less minutes and is younger and cheaper.
Cool

I have seen jazz buy 2nd rounders before. I have seen 2nd rounders thrown around like garbage too. Probably because they aint worth much. We got house without a second rounder. Ingles. Royce. wes matthews. etc etc.

The crying over 2nd rounders is entertaining though so I say we should keep getting rid of them to offload salary for that reason alone ;)
