What's new

Jazz acquire NAW and Juancho Hernangomez for Ingles, Hughes, and two 2nd round picks.

Locke had some interesting thoughts on Juancho as a good rebounder who can hit the corner 3 (historically, not this year), and how he might fit in the end of quarter/beginning of quarter lineup. It was towards the end of the podcast today.
I didn’t see the last game but the eye test in garbage time makes me feel as though he has more upside than either old Gay or Paschall. Probably need to see more to make a proper comparison between him and Paschall though.

I still think Gay getting his legs back has the highest upside, although as I've said my hope in that happening is quickly diminishing. Paschall has more upside as an overall player, but Juancho brings more length and rebounding which are sorely needed in many of our lineups. I'm honestly not sure what Juancho's upside is as a shooter. His shot has looked pretty bad for us so far. Looking at his 3P% over his career it has kind of been all over the place. He's a career 34% shooter on 668 total attempts, so that's probably what we should expect.

I'm very much Paschall > Gay....and at this point I think it's worth trying Juancho > Gay. Gay looks completely cooked.
Agreed. Though I also agree with SoberasHotRod that Gay playing up to his past ability is the best case scenario. I just dont think its ever going to happen at this point. The Rudy Gay that many of us thought we were getting was exactly what this team needed. To bad it didn't work out.

Nickeil was good in the 1st quarter. He had a nice mid-range jumper off the bounce, shot 1/2 on 3s and had a nice take to the rim for 7 pts in his first 6-minute stint. He finished with 5 assists and 1 turnover. He also guarded well and pushed the ball pretty well in the open floor.

He's made 5 of his last 10 3PAs.

I liked his one hand lay-up with the left hand. Add to the list of truly ambidextrous players on this team.

NAW's passing and defensive effort are a nice surprise. Will see if his shooting will get consistent here but it looks like he is a smart player so there is definitely a reason to believe he can improve playing for us.

I’m really glad we finally get to see what NAW can do. He is a phenomenal athlete. Only wish is that Paschall played more last night or started. He is better than Gay or juancho.

I think moving forward we need Juancho more than naw, butler or paschall heck even gay and Royce. we are already crowded in the guard position. Forrest didn't even play last night. Royce is just 6'5, gay 6'8, bogey 6'7 paschal 6'6. Juancho is 6'9 long arms can move and can rebound and block. he blocked Levine upfront and had 3 vs clips .something bogey lacks. if he can shoot like his Minny days at 42% from 3 he could give bogey some rest.

NAW 0-6 tonight… he’s been fine but we just really need to remember that he isn’t a shoot the lights out guy. He gets hot but mostly a bad shooter. He’s eliminated some of the ******** in his current role which is good.

too much arc on that shot. but also there was a nice bounce pass to Rudy that reminds me so much of Mike Conley.

I thought hernangoat was a dud. didn't expect hell contribute on the defensive end.

Nothing’s changed IMO. These two are just what the doctor ordered and a vast improvement over the GLeague scrubs like Morgan and Hughes that we trotted out last year. Their length and defensive prowess will help us in emergency minutes and on the practice court. I also expect that their shots will start falling more consistently too once they feel more comfortable in their new surroundings.

He really seems to only be able to shoot when he is truly spotting up and has a few seconds to get his feet set. Any motion at all, a simple single dribble, or a slight step to the side, or catching on the move, or a slight breeze pushing him minutely off-balance, is enough to send his shot careering wildly against the rim at some weird angle. I haven't seen many shooters miss so utterly randomly as he seems to. One shot off the back of the rim, one between the rim and backboard, one off the left side of the rim, one barely glances off the right front of the rim, an air ball. one nearly hits the side of the backboard. The dude is just all over the place. But we have seen if he can just sit there, have his feet set, and catch and shoot it without any other movement he can hit the shot. But wow, I think he is the most inconsistent "shooter" I have seen. The shooting coaches have their work cut out for them.

You have seen Russell Westbrook shoot, haven't you?

Count me in as a fan of Juan.
He is easily the biggest and best surprise in all this. I did not expect that kind of energy or especially skill on defense. He can hit the open 3 if he is set, and he seems more consistent at it than NAW, missing usually long or short like someone who can actually shoot the ball. Good shooters tend to miss on distance, not direction. NAW misses all over the place, but Juancho tends to miss long or short. He will be a good asset in the playoffs if he can just give us 10 minutes of energy and pesky D. I like the lineup with Butler, NAW, Paschall, Juancho, and Whiteside. Yeah odds are we won't see that in the playoffs but they have a different energy to the starters sometimes. At least worth some burn in the regular season. Make us surprisingly deep as a team.

I wasn't counting clowns. Lots of clowns with worse shots.

Plus I did identify the label of a "shooter", which fits NAW, but has never fit Westbrook in his life. No one would call him a shooter, and they never have. But NAW should be a shooter really.
