HC candidates

Andy Larsen on ESPN 700 said he would probably put Will Hardy and Kevin Young right up there with Johnnie Bryant in terms of front runners at this point...both guys have really impressed in their interviews. Said he's hearing the Jazz want to go young and don't want a retread. Said they want someone that connects to the players, also said the Jazz were pleased with the player development during Quins first 5 years and they've been disappointed with it the last 3 seasons, and they'd like that to improve under the next head coach.
FWIW the JazzLeaks twitter page said that Kevin Young was a candidate to watch a couple weeks ago.

That page is *** they also said we’re interviewing D’Antoni.
Seems to hit on things and miss on things. Predicted UFC event in SLC, the jersey launch date 2 weeks before anyone else, and the Kevin Young news. But also said we would interview D'Antoni, wanted to trade back into the 1st, etc.

I do think it's down to Young, Hardy, and Bryant though.

Signing a young, first-time coach may mean that Ainge wants to be the senior voice in the organization and not be challenged. It could also mean the Jazz want someone who is hungry and who will work extra hard to prove himself. Or, both.

I think you want someone's sharp enough to bring new energy to the current group but who's young and could grow with a new group if we decide to blow it up.

I feel a little bit sorry for Alex Jensen. He turned down the U of Utah head job and it appears the organization and the owner are going to crap on him. When covid hit Quin I thought he handled himself and the team well.

I won't be surprised if he's retained if Johnnie Bryant is hired. I just think that they felt we need a new voice in the locker room and promoting him is kind of holding onto the Quin era.

Ainge said he is still under contract and is running the summer league team. The guy won coach of the year honors the year he coached in the GLeague so it isn't his first rodeo.

Jensen still being around leads me to believe that Johnnie Bryant will ultimately be the coach. IIRC they worked on Quin’s staff together. Plus Andy Larsen specifically mentioned the team being upset about the lack of player development and it is on the same timeline as JB’s departure. He’s close with a bunch of the current players particularly Don so I think he ultimately gets the job.

The lack of player development is just a hoot. How many times over the last three years did we get fed the old chesnut about how good Quin was with this player development thing? Now we hear the management is pissed off about it. Which time were they lying to us?

So two white guys and johnnie bryant… I think they gotta go with johnnie then don’t they?

I don’t know that Jensen stays if Bryant is the coach. My concerns with Bryant is the possible buddy-buddy with Donovan. Bryant doesn’t have any HC experience and his reputation comes from his work with people individually. That doesn’t mean it’s bad or he can’t do the task, but that’s not specifically what we need to see on a résumé. I favor Jensen or Griffin. If it’s really down to Bryant, Young or Hardy, then I’m a little concerned in all of those guys’ ability to manage our particular dynamic.

Anyway, I’m on a tangent. Jensen is a bit older and has HC experience and has been a lead assistant even when Bryant was here. I don’t think he sticks around as an assistant in the same way that Igor was lead assistant under Quin but then became a HC. When he lost his job as HC, he went back to being an assistant, but isn’t going to return under the same person. It doesn’t have anything to do with any problem, it’s just an odd dynamic at that point.

The Celtics assistant was a head coach for a couple of years at a small college.

Good to know. If I recall correctly, he looked like the deacon’s quorum president. How old is he?

I think there is some truth to it, Quin seemed to have been reluctant to play younger guys and let them learn/grow from their mistakes over the past couple seasons.

If JB is hired as the coach I think it will be extremely important for us to bring in a former HC with experience as his top assistant. I'd be happy with JB as the HC and Stotts as his primary assistant.

I argued that’s what Quin needed last year. Perhaps we’d be in a different place right now.
