Jazz and Knicks discussing Donovan Mitchell trade per Shams Charania and Tony Jones

I think it’s possible that the Donovan Knicks are never actually good so that’s why I’m still hunting for a ‘24 swap that is functional.

Here’s what I’m thinking currently: say they can get a protected first in ‘24 that is likely to convey from the Raptors (or whoever) for Bogey (or whoever) and they put in the language that the Knicks get the least preferable of the picks due to the Jazz. If the Jazz are bad enough to keep their own pick and the Knicks are also bad, then the Jazz should get the two highest picks of the three and the Knicks would get the lowest. If the Jazz rebound and don’t keep their ‘24 then the Jazz get the higher of the Knicks or Raptors. Something like that.
It just occurred to me that hammering out a wrinkle like this could be something that takes time all in its own. Stuff like this could be the holdup. That’s what I’m going to hope.

Something like that).

I think a lot of you guys are sleeping on how good the Knicks would be. I'm not saying they would be an NBA championship favorite but I do think they would be a really good team. Brunson and Mitchell would be one of the best backcourts in the nba and Barrett is a good sf that still has a lot more upside. Everyone is hating on Randle but 2 years ago he was awesome and carried that team to the playoffs. He shot like crap last year but I would expect him to get back to his usual percentages this year. Then you have a solid rim running defensive center in Mitchell who also still has room to improve. I think that is a really good starting 5. The bench is tricky because some of those guys would be used to match salaries but let's assume they only send out Fournier, Toppin and Grimes. That leaves a solid bench trio of Rose, Quickley and Hartenstein plus 3 prospects in Reddish, Sims and McBride that I really like. That is a really solid team right there. They probably need to add one more long wing for depth but I think that is a 3-5 seed in the east.

I've been listening to the Locked on Knicks guy a bit and its kinda hilarious what they think it will be. Lots of Knicks guys are like "maybe the Knicks will add Julius Randle to grease the wheels".

My guess is that we are holding out until the Knicks pony up their unprotected picks... they know it... if they make a fast deal and its a ton then they look bad. If they aren't willing to pony up AT LEAST 2 of their own picks unprotected I don't think it would be a stretch to argue the Heat deal could get better (it depends on what the Heat can get for Herro). The firsts they have that are protected like the Was, Detroit firsts are firsts we can get anywhere. I definitely want the Knicks 23 pick unprotected. Next year could get ugly. If I can get like 23/26/28 unprotected with a swap in between I might settle on 3 picks from the Knicks and some of the other stuff we want.

I would guess we asked for the moon and they low balled us a little on the counter and said "do better". We go back to Heat and Nets and see what they have uncovered... rumors get out that we may actually prefer those other packages... Knicks step back in with the goods and it finally closes. I think if it doesn't happen today/tomorrow we are looking at 3 weeks or so.

There is only one ball though... Randle wants it, Brunson went there in part to get it more, Don will want it obvi, and RJ is out there trying to establish himself. I don't think they will suck but I think they are likely a play in team with or without Mitchell. The East is super strong through 5. Then you have Bulls, Cavs, and Nets? I think Knicks are like the 7th best team in the East unless they have an amazingly lucky run. Anything can happen in the play in. Then you have a 7-8% chance at a top 4 pick and worst case there have been a lot of great players picked in the 11-14 range in the last few years.

23/26/28 with swaps in 27/29 would be cool if we got 3 other 1sts from them. I think the 2023 Washington 1st is the least valuable of the 8 they can trade.

And I'd like to get Toppin and Quickley for entertainment purposes. I think Grimes may become the more useful player but he's not a deal breaker for either side imo. He may be having a Desmond Bane like glow up in summer league or it might not be THAT big of an improvement.

I don't think we are as close as bigmike and others think... I think we may actually move other pieces first. I could see the Knicks deal going all the way until September when the other pieces we got can be aggregated.

Didn't see this posted - granted I haven't read the novel that this forum has become... ;)
I hope that he's not right....

If neither the Raptors nor Jazz picks conveys because of protections then the Jazz get a 2nd or maybe swap just doesn’t happen. Something like that.

But I strongly believe that the Jazz need to be in position intercept any possibility of a premium draft asset falling the Knicks’ way.
Love it. If they can swing something like that, I’m all for including the 24 swap. Just don’t want to include assets that are likely to be worthless.
