Jazz and Knicks discussing Donovan Mitchell trade per Shams Charania and Tony Jones

People talk as If the Jazz need to trade Donovan to commit to tank for this season

I don't see the current roster fighting for a play in spot (right now Blazers is better than us, a healthy Lakers should be, and who knows what will be off the Westbrook saga, and maybe even Kings and OKC may have more talent overall than us). With some trades that should be expected (Bogey and Beverley) even If Donovan isn't traded by trade deadline, it's easy for us to be losing as many games as any team in the West that isn't located in Texas, and looking East, the worst two records got more talent coming in rather than going out.

Dok// Kessler
Bogey// vando
Beasley// Italian dude
Mitchell// JC
Conley//Beverly

They could also work a sign and trade for Sexton. There’s something there. Quite honestly this roster could go one way or another. At the very least I see this team fighting for a play in bid.

On another strange note. The Dok pick is finally relevant lol

Dok sucks. I'd rather throw Kessler into the fire or just bring back Whiteside.

OMG I am soooo ready for this trade to happen. It is driving me nuts.
Since the Rudy trade, I’ve gone from:

- Wanting to use our newfound assets to retool around Don.

- To reluctantly embracing a Don to NY deal and all of the draft assets that would come with it.

- Back to wanting to keep Don and telling NY to go **** themselves.

At this point, I just can’t think of anything more funny than the fallout headed the Knicks way should they botch bringing the golden boy home when he was there for the taking.

I’m sure most fans on here will disagree with me, but I think the odds of Utah rebuilding around Don to the point where he stays put and we’re legit contenders in a year or 2 is probably just as mathematically possible as trading both Don and Rudy and completing a rebuild that sees the Jazz better off than they were prior to said rebuild.

I don't think it makes sense to go after Sexton if you don't move Mitchell (i also think you'd still have to move off at least two of Conley, JC and Beasley, and not be banking on Butler, but this summer league was really about Butler letting us down) as that partnership is as doomed defensively as Mitchell and Conley is (or Lillard and McCollum was). Also can't see a Beasley or Clarkson as SF being winning basketball for long stretches, especially if not playing alongside Beverley (who should be expected to be moved). Vanderbilt can defend, but he can't shoot (nor really be counted on to dribble or pass), anytime he's on the court it's an automatic double on Mitchell or whoever is our best player on the court (or simply an extra man clogging the paint). Dok and Kessler could be decent, but i wouldn't bet much on that (Doke had some flashes last season, but can he stay healthy ? If so, can he avoid foul trouble, hack strategies and show enough cardio ? And Kessler is a young rookie at a position that usually takes longer for develop even for higher picks, let alone at the 20s). A too guard heavy rotation (with just one among five names there known for his defense) with a terrible frontcourt and bigman rotation. That's a feasible one of the worst defenses of the league, without an elite offense to counter.

Also, i'd be much more concerned if i thought higher of this roster as of now. To be able to go to the bottom of the league is waaaay better to me than having that much hability to pretend to be in a play-in race with a mostly low upside veteran roster. A team like OKC could benefit off a play-in game or two, even the Kings could. Us ? That would be many valuables picks worse for a core of too much guys above 30 that ain't great (nor at great value at their deal), some "not so old to younger" average-ish role players and just one young star. Try to compete now would be the ultimate Knicks/Kings season (or this past Wizards season), and it's hard to sell me that we should be aquiring players instead of assets at this point.

I don't think we should need to feel pressed to trade for Donovan, as, at the worst, if anyone is interested at offering a haul as Ainge is demanding right now, we'll still be able to demand for 3 firsts, some swaps and some combination of young players and later tradeable role players for salary matching, even if he asks out (which i believe should be expected either if we do just okay for a 9th place and play-in tournment success or overall bottom out the league), as there will still be another two guaranteed years on his contract for a player that should put some big numbers next season.

The proposed three-team trade scenario included Westbrook going to Utah and getting bought out. Utah would send Donovan Mitchell to the Knicks, a combination of two players, including Patrick Beverley and Jordan Clarkson, Bojan Bogdanovic or Malik Beasley to the Lakers, and the Jazz would receive significant draft pick compensation from the Knicks and Lakers. The Knicks also would’ve had to part with veteran salary filler(s), such as Derrick Rose to help make the salaries work.

That doesn't preclude them from putting a framework in place. Season doesn't start until October 19.
And that may be what they have done…. But there would still be physicals and all that… so you wouldn’t necessarily announce something prior to September. They may have a decent idea of what everyone would accept but just waiting out the clock to further down the road.

Its also the nba so you wouldn’t want to agree to something 45 days in advance and then have a guy tear an ACL in an offseason workout or have something else happen… I think the September clock is hindering some of these things from getting too far down the road.

No doubt, but they aren't announcing anything. They could simply have the framework for the deal and see if anyone has a better offer. If not, shoot the deal when they can trade the affected players.

It sucks to wait....but I feel like some deal is 95% in place already and we'll have to wait a few more weeks/important dates to pass before it's announced and agreed upon. There's a lot of details to work out, and it takes time and there's always going to be a game of chicken for the last asset. No real reason for either side to cave in until right before the season.

It's a boring time of the summer. We've discussed all the iterations 100x over by now.
