Lauri Markkanen Hype & Appreciation Thread

I'm begining to think lauri doesn't have the alpha dog mentality. He's talented but vs Dallas just not enough. 14 pts 0 assist and Clarkson found him under the basket 3-4 times so most of his points was spoonfed. He need to demand the ball and punish the guy in front of him. He's 7 ft. We just lost by 3
But then again he did great job with the game before, worked quite well in few tighter games and so on... I dont know what it is, bc this has been going on before. Is it him not gotten enough touches during the game he feels his touch is not there to take closing shots, or is it endurance based thing that might be resolved with more summer training. s someone that has watches almost all his games in the NBA I think it's it of both. Those issues can be resolved. Spacing in the corner he would have had several times the baseline open for a moment if he ever got the ball at those few lapses Mavs had... Like that kinda of lanes that he used for the reverse dunk few games back. He has had somewhat tendency to disappear in some games if he hasn't got touches. So true, he has to become more alpha bc his game is so much about rhythm and consistent touches. So ask the all from the bang.

Something is definitely off. I just checked the stats for touches, and Markkanen averages 51.3 touches in 33.9 minutes per game. That 51.3 is 38th most among players listed as forwards. KO averages 54.7 in 26.8 minutes.. so more touches for Olynyk in less minutes. And Lauri is our leading rebounder, so he gets extra touches there.
NBA.com touches for Forwards

Only 2 forwards in the league with 50+ touches per game average more points per touch than Markkanen. Those two are KD and Zion.

Definitely needs to see the ball way more. Especially late in close games. Thats also the only way to find out if he can be the #1 guy.

Your take on Lauri seems to be rather similar what I've perceived over years, though I have only occasionally watched his games. There have been that weird changing curve in his consistency, it's clear. One night he can be and act like total stud, and next night almost disappearing altogether. His court presence is somewhat hard to qualify also for the fact that in one game he can put in a series of highlight reel dunks and but in a next game still have better stats and score more points, unceremoniously, without causing too much fuzz from attendance.

Hopefully he can continue on his new higher level, and upwards trajectory.

He is baller, and baller needs the ball. For sure.

Need a lot of reps with Lauri at the 5. I envision the future of the Jazz to be one where you get an athletic switchy 5 who can rim protect to start next to Lauri then you have Lauri finish games at the 5.

I don't think he cares about touches, and neither does the team. Just feed him in the flow of the game, which is exactly where he flourishes.
The problem with that is he has built more of a passive mindset because of the way teams have used him so far in his career but that mindset doesn't even come close to helping him maximize his talent. From a size, athleticism and skillset standpoint Lauri is absolutely elite. We need to change his mindset so that the second he steps in the court he feels like he is the best player on the court and builds more of a killer mentality. That doesn't mean we want him being selfish but we do we want him being ultra aggressive because he is a matchup nightmare and if teams are paying more attention to him it should open up the floor for the other guys.

The Jazz should care and make sure he gets plenty. It isn't just about within the flow. It's training him to be one THOSE dudes.
Exactly. We need him feel like he is the best player every time he steps on the court regardless of whether he really is. That is how all elite players feel.

I agree, kinda, but it's tough to be one of those guys when you're not a ball handler. Even star bigs are basically at the mercy of their guards, unless there's a team-wide standing order like "Pass this guy the ball every time down the floor OR ELSE". Some teams operate this way, some don't. Jokic runs his team from the center position and you'd be crazy to freeze him out if you're his teammate. Embiid USED to run his team, but with the arrival of a ball-dominant star guard (Harden), he's suddenly just another guy waiting to get his hands on the rock.

I think he already does. He plays with a lot of confidence, taking shots when he gets the rock and going for the rim directly at guys like AD and Gobert.

His average touch duration is barely over 2 seconds. He isnt holding the ball or bouncing it much. Instead he directly goes for the kill or passes it forward.

Are you sure it was "built"? Some dudes are just not of that mentality. They play far better in complementary roles.
but that mindset doesn't even come close to helping him maximize his talent.
He's been playing ball for a long time. What you are suggesting is a fundamental overhaul of what he _is_.

Markkanen gave an interview to Finnish broadcasting company YLE. Here are some key points:

He said he is getting along with others really well and enjoying everyones company, especially Sexton.

He seems to be fond of the city, and is about to move in to his own house (currently still living in hotel but apparently has found a place).

He feels like he has lots of areas he needs to develop in, and doesnt feel he has shown his best yet.

They also interviewed Hardy, who felt like Lauri is much further in his development than Lauri seems to think, and is also much more integral part of his plans than we have seen.
