If there was a nuke launched at Berlin and that didn't result in NATO declaring war on Russia then there is no such thing as NATO.

I think the U.S. might make a limited nuclear response, targeting some remote area that has some sort of military or natural resource primary purpose. But on the heels of that would be full mobilization of NATO and declared war on Russia.

In reality, though, I think that if Putin edges too close to that cliff he gets done in from the inside. I don't think the launch happens because I think people very very close to him will prevent it and remove him and dance Putin's shackled self in front of NATO and say "we stopped nuclear holocaust, we will take care of Putin, just let us be the new rulers here and we'll play nice for now.

100% agree.

The question though is what does NATO do IF Russia launches a nuke? If that happens and NATO doesn't declare war against Russia then NATO was an illusion the whole time. We lose automatically if we let someone launch a Nuke and then announce economic sanctions in response.

Yeah but the people standing next to him are survivors who have been playing the game for a very long time. It's the classic love vs fear question and my guess is that most of his closest people are driven by fear. If they think that a nuke launch will harm them more than Putin can then they might be willing to stop him. I have no idea, really. I don't think Putin is legitimately inspiring, his patriotism is as real as Trump's is. Which means he is leader of Russia because it's good for him, not because it's good for Russia. So the people that are close enough to see the graft for what it is aren't in this for the motherland and their undying patriotism. They are riding the bear and will do anything and everything they can to survive.

EDIT: I re-read the post and realized that I had capitalized "Patriotism" and while I DO intentionally capitalize when not technically correct, this wasn't one of those times.

I really hope the geniuses in the think tanks that help develop U.S. strategy on this stuff have a solution different than that.

I have no ill will for the people of Russia. I don't want to pull an Elizabeth Warren but my verbal family history is that my maternal grandfather claimed to be Irish but when my mother and her mother did some genealogy research they couldn't find evidence of that and found decent evidence that he was a Russian Jew. I'm led to the conclusion that when he came to the U.S. he made the decision that a very short alcoholic gambling addict plays better as an Irishman than a Russian Jew so he just went all the way on his new identity. So as far as I understand I'm 1/4th Russian of Jewish heritage.

Whatever happens to Russia will be a warning to the Chinese. You know the Russian people kind of deserve it, 600 years of subjugation to dictators, they've had about 15 minutes of democracy in their history and have ****ed it up both times for dictatorship.

If anyone doesn't realize the value and importance of what the U.S., NATO and the EU have accomplished by supplying equipment to Ukraine then they are kind of dumb.

Do we want to return to a world where powerful nations are allowed to invade and conquer smaller nations in order to acquire territory? I don't! This has massive significance for the future of our species. Ukraine must stand! Russia must lose and lose in as painful and shameful a way as possible.

Neither country is important nor worth the entire globe suffering. One country is ran by a dictator, the other is historically the one of the most corrupt countries in the near history.

At the end of the day anybody blaming Republicans for not backing a war not a single of us wanted but Biden pushed is flat out stupid. This would've never happened if Biden didn't open up Nord 2 allowing Putin to bypass Ukraine. The blood is on Biden voters after one of the most peaceful presidencies in modern American history. We finally had peace, were signing peace treaties, and were ready to end a useless war where we ourselves invaded over nothing. That all went out the window once Biden took office.
