Roster Building From Here - FA and Summer of 2023

Yeah, I'm probably too low on him. I'm just not jazzed about paying a premium for a small PG that's about to be 30.
I totally get that. Outside of age and size, he’s a straight baller.

Him with Lauri and Kessler, then a developing Ochai, Sexton etc etc.

I totally am changing my tune.

He's definitely a boss, but if we got him I'd like to see him dial back his shot selection a notch

Tony Jones was on ESPN700 this afternoon and he sounded kind of pessimistic about the likelihood of Clarkson being back next season. Said he thinks the offer from the Jazz will be conservative in terms of money and especially in terms of years...he thinks JC will want more years on his next contract than the Jazz are willing to give. He also said the Jazz see Ochai as their starting shooting guard going forward and Sexton as their 6th man, so if the Jazz re-sign Clarkson, they will be looking at having two 6th men on their roster. Also said Clarkson may have outgrown the role he would have if he were to stay with the Jazz.
I love that the Jazz are realistic about Sexton

Bobby Marks did a Raptors offseason analysis that talked about FVV a lot. The cliffnotes:
-FVV turned down a 4-year $114 million extension (that's a hair under $30 million per year on average, so I would imagine he declines his option and hits free agency)
-FVV has played the second-most minutes of anyone in the league over the past three seasons.
-FVV leads the league in miles covered per game over the past three seasons

So you gotta pay him well above $120m/4 seasons to get him, but he is about to turn 30, is one of the smallest guys in the entire league, and might grind himself to dust.

I don't know about the whole thing. On the one hand, the Jazz are positioned to roll some dice in free agency with their cap sheet the way it is, an influx of rookie-scale players, and a cap lift in 2025. On the other hand, there is still the matter of opportunity cost: the Jazz don't have infinite opportunities to roll dice, a wasted roll takes some serious ammunition out of the chamber. That cap sheet merely allows them to survive without jettisoning assets if it goes bad (which is better than the alternative), but it could also be a millstone that prevents the team from reaching its ceiling.

Players in their 30's drive me nuts when trying to anticipate their trajectories. Some guys are effective well into their mid-thirties, and some guys fall of a cliff over the course of one or two seasons. But if you're assessing a player, you can lean on good shooters and players that have plus size for their position (and might be able to shift up a position to compensate for lost athleticism). FVV has the former but has **** all for the latter.
