I think the biggest area for improvement is going to come defensively, especially if you arent re-signing Clarkson and you instead are able to get a Bruce Brown or Josh Hart.

I was surprised when I looked this up just now:

- The KO, Kessler, Lauri, Conley, JC lineup had a defensive rating of 106.5 (74 minutes together)
- The KO, Kessler , Lauri, THT, Agbaji lineup had a defensive rating of 111.4 (147 minutes together)

Median defensive rating this year was 113.5.

Our defensive rating pre trade deadline was 116.0 (27th)
Our defensive rating post trade deadline was 116.0 (19th)

Our Offensive rating pre trade deadline was 116.6 (3rd)
Our Offensive rating post trade deadline was 112.4 (24th)

Josh Hart is coming back to NY, verbal agreement/understanding. Already been reported IIRC. We missed the boat.

Maybe....I've been the biggest Hart fan on this board but if we're going to Boozer Hart it should be with the intention of making them sweat more with the Quickley decision. It's fine to run up the tab on Hart, but be careful to not be the one paying it.

Well in free agency the only names that look even half-interesting to me are:
-Dennis Schroeder
-Ayo Dosunmu
-Coby White
-Jevon Carter
-Austin Reaves if you think he’s a PG (which I am 150% interested in)

In other words, the draft might make more sense. The Jazz also have a lot of PG-ish guards in the meantime if they don’t do anything for now.

For my part, I can’t quite figure out why Sexton is basically left out of this conversation.

Austin Reaves is the only guy that I’d really be interested in from this list. I’m totally fine with the Jazz making a run for him - even if the Lakers match, it’s a good move for Utah.

If they do match, I’d make a play for Immanuel Quickley that involves one of our draft picks and also taking back Fournier’s remaining contract into our cap space.

After that, I’d roll with THT, Sexton and Dunn and focus on adding wings this year and kick the PG can down the road. Maybe see what pops up around the trade deadline. Jazz can make calculated moves and still be patient enough to be opportunistic.

It's pretty crazy our defensive rating was exactly the same before and after the trade deadline, but that our ranking got so much better. There was an offensive explosion in the second half of the year in the NBA.

If our goal is to be good next year, we might have been better off keeping Conley vs whatever we can do with the cap space we saved from trading him.

I'm not sure what you do at pg... but you don't want to draft based on current need and I would be hesitant to pay FVV what it will take to get him. If its 4/120M front loaded a bit... that's kinda my limit. FVV denies turning down 4/114m or whatever it was.

Long term you'd want to get someone in that could takeover for FVV in a couple years, but its a solid medium term solution.

Another thing that I am a little hesitant on (as the resident "Ochai hater") is the assumption Ochai is a starter next year and that is why we might push JC out the door. Again, the dude is fine but I don't see some star trajectory for him and I would hate to pass on Hawkins because Ochai is viewed as the future at the 2. If we have the opportunity to keep JC for 3/45-50M that is a deal we should make imo, even though he is not 25... he has only gotten better and I bet he has at least 3-5 really solid years ahead of him. If he is looking to get 4/80M or something like that then I get moving on. I just think we might be dismissing his contributions while simultaneously overvaluing what Ochai projects to bring. I think Ochai can still get 25-30 minutes a night if you retain JC.

I'd look to trade for Tyus Jones this offseason. I don't think he has a Brunson level explosion but I think he's just super solid and I think he may take a smallish step forward as an everyday starter. I don't think Memphis will keep him beyond next year and so they may risk letting him walk for nothing. He is pretty valuable for them as a Ja backup that frequently gets forced into action. I just don't see how they make the budget work and not sure why he'd want to be a career backup.

I'd look to trade for Tyus Jones this offseason. I don't think he has a Brunson level explosion but I think he's just super solid and I think he may take a smallish step forward as an everyday starter. I don't think Memphis will keep him beyond next year and so they may risk letting him walk for nothing. He is pretty valuable for them as a Ja backup that frequently gets forced into action. I just don't see how they make the budget work and not sure why he'd want to be a career backup.

Just give them the 28th pick for Tyus. They love wasting their team's potential by filling their roster with rookie contract players.

I think like KO and 28 might get it done (they need a big to replace Clarke while he rehabs). I'd be willing to do something around a Cavs pick... maybe they eat Gay's contract in that scenario...

Some other scenarios... maybe dunn and 28? Maybe a trade up from 25 to 16? Maybe we get THT to opt in and send him with a pick. Maybe a sign and trade with JC or send them Sexton.

Their cap crunch really starts in 2024-25 season with Tyus so taking on some salary shouldn't be the issue... the issue is losing him for nothing.

Could Brantley and Frank Jackson be in play? Say JC leaves and the Jazz acquire some guy earning a bazillion dollars a year. These two could be minimum wage roster fillers that both apparently don't suck. .
