Roster Building From Here - FA and Summer of 2023

So what the Jazz need is another all-NBA 7 footer who can play inside out and drive a little too. If they had a guy like that, it would make it very hard, theoretically, to double Kessler, or to stick their best unicorn stud post defender/small ball specialist on him to nullify him.

Unfortunately, guys like that are near impossible to find and just aren't made available, so I am not sure where we get one. But if we DID have someone like that, theoretically, good luck "small-balling" the Jazz after they add a few more shooters with length.
The thing that will determine if Kessler can play against 5 out will be his ability to defend on the perimeter. Having other players that can defend the perimeter and secondary rim protectors/rebounders will help as well.

Eh, I dont think naz reid is all nba. Hell, he isn't even a starter. Jaren jackson jr wasn't all nba either. Dont think he was even an allstar. Also I dont think your center has to be 7 feet tall. Also never said anything about being able to drive with the ball. I do think it helps to not be able to hack a shaq your centers so you want him to be a decent free throw shooter.

Not looking for a unicorn or a superstar. I just think in todays nba its nice if your center can shoot it a little (not great or anything. just respectable) and pass a little (again not jokic level or anything), and defend the perimeter a bit. Nothing super crazy about that imo. We like to throw out the term unicorn alot but the fact is that bigs that can play on the outside on both ends are becoming less and less rare. Not really unicorns anymore.

I think Kessler is awesome. I do worry that certain teams will be able to exploit his weaknesses and make it hard for him to stay on the court in the playoffs. I hope im wrong though. I didn't enjoy the clippers series when they went small. Or the warriors series when they went small.

For those who have PTSD over our past team's inability to defend 5 out, I think this Jazz team is already in much better position because of Lauri. Having a secondary rim protector/rebounder is a huge deal and is critical when a team is able to take away your main rim protector from the paint. Now we just need to hope that Kessler can learn to defend the perimeter as well as Gobert learned to.

I also think we are in better position because our team rotates 1 million times better than our last team and Hardy is way more willing to experiment with defensive schemes. Lastly, but maybe most importantly, hopefully we will end up with guards who are more capable of staying in front of their guy or navigating simple screens.

Good point

We can bring back Westbrook this coming season, he'd be really cheap since he went 3-18 in his last clippers game ever with a botched layup and a costly turnover to end the series

Is it? I'm not sure 0.6 blocks per game supports the notion that Lauri is a good rim protector.
there were some rim protection numbers out earlier in the year that showed opponents shot really poorly when he was in the area. It passes the eye test to me. So there is some data to it even if he has low block rates... it might be a little fluky but I think you could run him as a 5 or with another guy that can masquerade as a 5. One of the appeals for me in getting Taylor Hendricks would be to run 5 out and protect the rim with Lauri and Taylor for 10 minutes or so a night or more if matchup dictated it.

True but he has to be better than niang or who the hell ever was our secondary rim protector with rudy. Plus, blocks doesn't equal rim protection necessarily. I could be wrong but I think I remember someone posting the defensive stats from this season and lauri was pretty good defensively around the rim. Plus he is 7 feet tall, moves well, and is very athletic. I would think Lauri could be a good secondary rim protector and that was an idea/point I hadn't thought of so I appreciated the post.

Edit: HH beat me by like half a second. SOB is quick with his posts.

Oh, that is maybe the main reason I am high on Hendricks. A 4/5 of him and Lauri and you have a pretty lethal combination of attributes that get you more than 50% of the way to an effective all-switching defense and true 5-out offense.

This. Would love to see a 5 out offense next season.

I also think you can run Taylor, Lauri and Walker together since Lauri and Taylor (maybe) have shown the ability to guard on the perimeter. You wall off the paint completely with those 3... I think offense might be a bit of an issue if you don't have some great creating/passing guards... but every team has some flaws.

I think the biggest thing towards us treading water at the play-in line or firmly in the playoffs next year is if Dunn is actually what he looked like at the end of the season. If he is that, and the coaches probably know, roll back Clarkson and let's go. It is really, really rare for a rookie to make a difference. We got spoiled last year.

End of year Dunn as your worst case at PG is a pretty good position to be in.

Yeah, when I play out different draft/offseason scenarios, it becomes pretty clear that the Jazz are gonna be in need of a dynamic playmaker in most scenarios. Sexton is fine but his size and PG chops are sub-optimal, I still don't know what the **** THT is or what's going on there, it's somewhat questionable as to the overall impact Clarkson makes but he's gonna be 31 next year and re-signing him in earnest is not my first choice, and who knows to what degree Dunn's performance was real or how long it lasts. Wallace or Black have their own shortcomings but I am definitely interested in investing in the position/skillset this offseason.

This is also why I'm high on Mintz. I think he's of a dying breed of guard that goes out there and whose 1st, 2nd, and 3rd objective is to set others up and always have the radar going on how to get the ball into the weak point of the defense. I think the compounding benefits of that style of play are getting lost in the hubbub of position-less basketball (kinda like giants that do giant stuff really well a la Kessler).

This brings me no joy... but... @KqWIN is right... we need to trade for Immanuel Quickley.

His on/off diff over his career is bonkers. He's been ranked like 35th, 3rd, and 21st. His numbers as a starter are bonkers. He likely can be extended this offseason for about 4/80M before his raw stats go crazy as a full-time starter. Knicks likely won't want to keep him as a backup forever and we can offer another pick they can use for their eventual star trade.

I would hope to get him for just one of our premium picks... but I'd also consider taking Fournier's 1 year left as well too. Hopefully would not require more than that... but if there is a little more we should consider it. IQ is the answer at pg.

I think IQ is just kind of an ok passer though, right?

He is efficient and defends well, but I'm not sure if he helps with our need for passing/play making.
