How Much $$$ Should Jazz Throw at Austin Reaves?

Sadly I can see Lebron ending up in Dallas with Kyrie and Doncic but it likely wouldn't happen until the '24 offseason when he can just walk in FA. He obviously wants to play with stars. AD actually stayed somewhat healthy during the postseason but that is an anomoly with him at this point. Lebron and AD just take up too much of their cap for them to make a significant addition this offseason unless Kyrie decides to take a big paycut. When the Nets tried offering him a smaller than max deal that sent him off the deep end though. Cuban is definitely going to offer the max and don't see Kyrie turning that down.

As for Reaves it's going to be nearly impossible to get him out of LA due to the Arenas rule. Even if he gets a ridiculous contract he will only count for like $12 mil on their cap for next season with the balloon payments in subsequent years but Lebron and potentially AD could very well be off their payroll by that point. Apparently the Rockets have a ton of capspace and huge interest in Reaves this offseason too. Lakers made a huge mistake letting home grown Caruso walk and highly doubt they make the same mistake with Reaves who I believe is the better, younger all around player.
What if they have done too good of a job in scaring off offers for Reaves and he doesn’t get an offer over what they can match? Does he take like a 1-2 year deal? Seems like no team wants to “help” the Lakers so maybe no team wants to lock up the cap space just to have them match.

If LAL ends up matching a 4/96 offer for Reaves, that means they pay him ~36/year in 25/26 and 26/27. That's a pretty hefty sum. I think it's debatable how much that's helping them. That said, if we were to throw 4/96 on him, I'd want them to match.

For us it’s a flat cap hit though. It would be 24.5M per year.

Its helping them because if no other team offers and he does like a 1+1 he's a flight risk. For a team to allocate 25M in cap space (for a day) they need to believe LA won't match. If they called and said "hey can you make this offer so we can close this deal... we will match super fast" I might ask for something in a separate deal to play ball.

Maybe they are good with 1+1 if no other suitors are willing to do the dance. I could see Austin getting screwed a bit and getting pissy.

Genius thinking. Let’s collude with them to drop the protections on their pick. This is the Ralph Macchio scenario where they scratch our balls, we scratch theirs.

so that means first 2 years he get 12m. if im reeves i'd explore other teams and get payed now and not wait year 3-4 to get 36m

dear Lord Danny we need you

If LAL matches, he'll get 12+12+36+36 (given a 4/96 contract). If they don't match he gets 24*4.

Not sure it matters that much to Reaves. He'll earn just as much money over 4 years anyway (maybe different tax hit, not sure), and it's not like 12M the first couple of years is pocket money.

Also, staying in LA is probably good for business in general.
