New ESPN Power Rankings

I predicted before the season started; fast start, brutal middle, encouraging end. 30-36. I'm feeling really good about my prediction right now.

The Rockets have played the most difficult schedule of any team by far!!! Their 6 losses are as follows:

At Orlando
At Memphis
At La Lakers
At La Clippers
At OKC
Home to OKC

Their wins have come against San Antonio and Atlanta.

No freebies in their schedule. That being said, I do think we should be higher, but not by much.

I actually didn't know how hard their schedule was...but at the same time it is a catch 22. They have played 8 tough opponents to start the season...being 2-6 against them is not exactly something that they should be proud of, if they truly were a good team they would be able to come out of that better than 2-6.

Houston should not be higher then Utah despite whoever they played. 2-6 vs 5-3? Joke.

also their testosterone level goes down with every loss. so in the future they will have a hard time getting wins.
its a momentum thing i guess

Yeah, I have decided to soak up the hype right now, enjoy the effort, and not pay attention to the crap we are beating, the home games, or all the practices we are getting right now with all the days off we have. I'm just going to enjoy it because come Feb, reality will hit and I am scared of that. I'll dream of playoffs now, knowing in the back of my mind, I will be dreaming for Barnes later.

Agreed. Hey, I can't really complain because we're beating the teams we really should be beating. There's nothing wrong with that.

Can our defense limit the Lakers, Nuggets, Heat, Celtics, Blazers, Mavs, Thunder, and Bulls to sub 45% FG shooting? I will be surprised if our defense is that good.

I am surprised by how well our defense is playing, but I am starting to think it might be the real deal. When I look at our team compared to other teams. We now look bigger and longer than we have in the past. Also we are at the top of the league in blocks. Seeing that we are holding teams to low scores is very encouraging. If we can hold teams to an average around 90 points per game, we are going to be real good. That's what championship teams do. It's starting to look like coach Ty really knows what he is doing with the new defensive philosophy. In the past, it didn't matter how crappy the team was, we were allowing 100 points or more to them. We would just out score them to the to win.

I never saw this coming, and I didn't think we were ready yet for a serious playoff push, but we may be. We are young and still have problems with our offense, but if our defense continues down this path, none of that matters. It's all about defense baby. At the beginning of the season I wanted to just tank and get another lottery pick, but this is getting interesting. I just don't want to end up barely missing the playoffs, and ending up with the 14 seed in the lottery.

If our defense continues to play well then we will do better than most of us expect on the road. Defense can carry over on the road. Those first few games might have been just working out some bugs.

The 1 thing that pissed me off about the ESPN power rankings is that it said something along the lines of, this is a start that no one would expect and remind you of when the Jazz called Delta Center home. We have been a great team long after our switch from Delta Center to E.S. arena. We are now and have always been the real deal post Stockton and Malone days. Ty Corbin will earn his respect and we will be a competetive team!

Hollinger rankings came out today. They were not as generous as the power rankings.

Jazz are 23rd with a rating of 96.5.

Recent wins against GS (22, 96.54), Mil (25, 95.4), Memphis (16, 98.3) and NO (19, 97.3) maybe aren't so impressive but a win against Philly (#1, 115.4) looks much better than it did at the time.

If Hollinger is correct expect to see the jazz record come back to below .500.

Scoring margin factors into these rankings... so getting blown out thrice by around 20 points surely was a major factor in the ranking

I suspect that if you ran the power rankins on the last five games instead of all 8 that the jazz would do much better under Hollinger's formulation. As is, unless the Jazz win a couple games by wide margins (something defensive teams tend to struggle to do) I would expect the hangover of those early games on the rankings to last for some time.

I dont follow all the power rankings and stuff but how in the hell are GS (2-6) , Memphis (3-5)and Hornets (3-6) ahead of us, we beat them. The worst is the 76ers are 1st and we beat them too

Agreed. You should publish a ranking that ranks teams above all of the teams that they've defeated.
