I wonder if the shooting stuff backfired. I don't think it helps him or the team to be spacing out....ever. He should be around the basket. Rudy's offensive game wasn't pretty, but it was effective because he stayed in his lane. I always rejected the idea of Rudy trying to add a post game or jump shot because it took away from what he was really effective at. When bigs start to get too cute and finesse, it may look more skilled, but it is often not as effective.

If you look at who Danny Ainge brought in to play at the 5 with the Celtics, it was normally a versatile big that offered some shooting and playmaking--e.g., Horford, Olynyk, Daniel Theis, etc. Robert Williams is an exception, but he was playing off the bench much of the time.

Perhaps, but no really, Kessler is no where near as good as he was last season. You posted a couple of stats showing that his scoring and rebounding isn't much different from last season. But his efficiency is down by a HUGE margin, from 70% to 58% TS. His rebounding rate has gone down significantly, his TOV% have gone up by almost 50%. His PER is down by a ton, his VORP is 0 now. His win share/48 is cut by more than half. He looks soft and afraid of contact. He's just not been very good.

Unfortunately it isn't that simple, and it isn't just about Kessler. If he's hanging around the rim all the time, he's clogging the paint for everybody else.

These days it's so hard to start a guy who can only score from within 5 feet.

It’s not as simple as you describe either. Non shooting bigs can still be a part of a potent offense. We literally saw that year after year. What cannot be a part of an effective offense is Kessler spacing out and also looking for short hooks and such instead of going all the way to the basket. Him doing that does not unclog the paint anymore than actually being a threat and occupying a defender at the hoop.

Ideally, Kessler needs someone better than THT....but THT does a lot of things that helps Kessler IMO. He is decent at passing through traffic once at the basket, and Kessler can also clean up those wild layup misses at the hoop.

His blocks are up
His injuries are up too.
His teammates are down
His consistency in his role is down

There is some context to this imo

There are pluses and minuses. Obviously, Kessler is an interior presence. He's a paint deterrent. He anchors a defense and rebounds. It would be nice if our center could do that and also do more offensively.

I have heard that and defended that many many many times over the last decade or so.

Rudy made you foul him. Walker does not

Garbage, Rudy couldn't buy a call for his first few years in the league. He's only get to the line when he was intentionally fouled, which happened a lot then because he was a poor free throw shooter. He improved immensely and started getting a better whistle as he grew into his role.
