Extremely high asking price + No assurances (to other team) don't mix. There's no way that ends up in a deal that both sides agree on. It will be tank+Lauri next year.
Very low chance it happens. I don't like absolutes.

And you just have to game it out a bit. If GS does the trade anyway now Lauri is on their team. He will play and will want to play at a high level so he can get paid. As the team with his bird rights they have a bit more they can offer and also have Steph for a while so its a situation they can have some confidence in. It will be a deterrent to some and a no fly zone to others... but doesn't mean a team like GS wouldn't get irrational and see this as the last train home and do what they can to get on it. The other options are like Kyle Kuzma, Jerami Grant, Cam Johnson, or status quo.. at least right now.

There's hundreds of pages in this thread talking about this astronomical asking price for Lauri. OK, well you can't have it both ways and convince me that we will get that package without Lauri assurances. Like I said, if what Tony is saying is true, there is no trade. Lauri's stance will have to change or UTA's asking price will have to change.

In a world where everyone acts perfectly rational maybe. I can just imagine both sides saying in a year "what about the assurances!!!". When the other party doesn't do what they said lol. Of course prior to a transaction his team isn't going to be like "yes please trade for us so we can no longer sign an extension". Once the transaction happens it is almost surely his best option to work with them.

If the offer doesn't get big enough it will be because of contract status (which hasn't and won't change) and not assurances.

My guess is GMs won't be compelled to give their best offers until August 5th just ahead of when Jazz can R&E Lauri.

Teams always seem to wait until the deadline in this league.

Both of which could change but likely wont.
I have said all along Lauri wont be traded this off season. But even now, it still could happen. There is no rule preventing it. Golden state and/or the jazz could each do something dumb but they wont.

I don’t know what you mean by contract status, but you’re out of your mind if you don’t think assurances, or lack theoreof, doesn’t affect the offer. If Lauri says, “yes I promise re-sign with GSW” it is surely different from “no I will not re-sign with GSW”. Lauri’s preference has a major impact on the likelihood of trade and that is obviously controlled by Lauri himself.

If youre telling me this could happen because teams do irrational stuff…ok. Nothing has changed on my part. It’s not happening unless Lauri wants to go to GSW or the Jazz drop their price.

What else could I mean by contract status lol. He is on an expiring deal for an acquirer. Likely not for us.

Assurances have some impact but if the Warriors are like "okay we will do all the picks and swaps but not Podz unless we get assurances" then they dumb AF. In Lauri situation it costs him the ability to sign a $200M+ deal if he says "yes I will re-sign with the Warriors". So why would he say that? Similarly if he says "no I don't want to be traded" and then you trade for him... what are the consequences and do they change at all with or without assurances. Flip the script... Warriors say... he Lauri we will take care of the contract when you are up next year... then he tears his achilles... now what? There are times where assurances matter more like if you aren't going to offer a full max to a guy, or the guy is going to have a full max offer and clearly has a preferred destination... but for the most part I think its overstated.

Based on some tweets from TJ I do think there is some other motivation for these conversations with GS. I don't necessarily think we are trying to get a huge GS offer but might be using their offer as leverage either to get Lauri to sign his extension or to get another team to pony up a big offer.

Even if Lauri says... I will re-sign with you after the season it is completely and utterly unbinding in any form or fashion. Both ways assurances are absolute sales talk.

GSW's confidence in re-signing Lauri matters a lot. If Lauri said it was his dream to play with Steph and was guaranteed to re-sign in the same way that Bridges is, they would obviously feel more comfortable giving up their entire future for him. This is true for any team that may want to trade for him. It doesn't matter if it's GSW, SAS, HOU....whoever. Their confidence in re-signing him is incredibly important. It's not sales talk, it's essential information to have when deciding to make a major decision. When Ainge actually goes big game hunting, you don't think our confidence in re-signing that player is going to be meaningful? Of course it is.

I kinda feel like yall are pretending like we're at a negotiation table and I'm the other teams. While I do wish it were true that I could just give the Jazz everything they want, I'm not a actually MDJ lol.

Lauri Markkanen does not want to be traded.

He wants to stay in Utah and play for the Utah Jazz.
I’m curious if you have any insights as to why this is? I can imagine it’s at least partially because of a renegotiate and extend, but also because his family likes it here, he believes in Danny, etc. Or are there other reasons as well?

Confidence is important but if you are basing that confidence on what the player or agent said in their “assurances” then it’s pretty dumb. Their confidence should be in the fact they can offer 4% higher raises and an additional year on the contract. Their confidence should be in having a good basketball situation and living environment. If those things don’t add up then the assurances mean nothing… both ways. None of the assurances change the actual issue which is the contract status.

And think about it. If I present you a scenario where if you answer truthfully you go to jail for 12 months… but if you lie you walk free with no consequences. How much weight should I put in your answer? The more convincing Lauri is with his assurances the more likely he has to wait and risk not getting his big contract.

I have said it more than once. Ainge will eventually have to call someone’s bluff if he’s going big game hunting.

And I’m not saying GS does that here. I’ve been pretty clear the only deal that gets done is one that probably shouldn’t. I’m just saying there’s a chance albeit a small one. Actual real dollars and contract terms matter more than promises and assurances. I remember when Carlos Boozer gave assurances to the Cavs that he’d re-sign if they released him and he took a bigger offer when it was presented to him.

Lauri is waiting for the re-opening of The Training Table. He's heard so much about the cheese fries and dipping sauce.
