I have to jump in here and complain about the framing I often hear (and occasionally use myself): "voting against your self interest." I often vote against my own self interest because I think it's the right thing to do. Maybe for infrastructure in parts of the country I don't live in, maybe for healthcare for people I'll never meet, maybe for rights for groups I'm not part of.
I make a distinction between selfish interest and self-interest. Infrastructure and healthcare for people you don't meet are net goods for society which will ultimately benefit us all.
