Following Potential 2025 Draftees

John Hollinger wrote a piece for Athletic few days ago where he said Flagg is undeniable #1 and #2 is a debate between Harper and VJ.

Its also obvious he isnt that high on Bailey and indicated that GMs have to squint hard and project to justify him at #4.

Is Hollinger cooked? Is he more of a journalist than scout these days?
Hollinger usually gets some stuff right. IIRC he had Filipowski 9th and Collier 12th.

I may not share these opinions with Hollinger, but I don’t find these opinions to be that crazy. Harper is a strong consensus #2, but I don’t think it’s unreasonable to leave that door open.

Watched every byu game this season.

I think Saunders will be able to score. He is skilled and strong. He gets a small edge as the focal point off ball actions and has the strength to finish through contact. The concern is what position can he guard. I think he lacks the quickness to guard shooting guards and get over screens. So is he a scoring backup small forward at six five? And I doubt he will be a strength plus guy in the NBA.

Demin on other hand is a strength minus player right now. He would be the best a mid post guy against guards. That is not what BYU does. When he drives he gets knocked off by hand checking. I would say his shot isn’t broken but his footwork and base is inconsistent. Defensively he can stay in front. To me it is all about adding strength and reps to improve his footwork.

He's probably similarly skilled to a Sam Merrill? Though Merrill is a hyper elite shooter as evidenced by his FT%, which Saunders isnt. Saunders has better size though (ever so slightly, so not a big advantage), but less overall tertiary skills, but those may not matter all that much in the role he projects to play.

I would say it has taken years for Saunders to extend his range. I would expect it to be hard for Richie to be the same kind shooter in the NBA. But the kid is an effort guy and hard worker. I would also say he has more overall athletic ability for finishing around the hoop. In a lot of ways he reminds me of Royce O’Neal.

Not in skills. He reminds me his size and toughness.

I'm only wondering if he has turned more clickbaity. Everyone in that industry is measured by reads and likes and it must annoy many of the legit analysts when guys like Draymond and Perkins beat them on those metrics with their absolutely trash takes.

One thing that I noted was different when watching Tre Johnson in a full game vs highlights is how they use him. Texas really uses him like a 00's or 10's guard. It's like I'm watching Kobe or Pierce set up for a mid post isolation/faceup possession over and over. I think this is part of the reason he doesn't get the rim as much as you'd like...but it could also be the case that this is just the style that suits him the most. There's not a whole lot of north/south action going on. Ideally he's a Booker and can do both in a more modernized role.

In this draft I think the top-tier guys are four deep. I would be good with Flagg, Harper, Bailey or Johnson. I think Edgecombe is more of a risk than the top-four - though he could be high-risk high reward. I love his defense but the other guys are more of a sure thing, IMO. After VJ I think there's a decent talent drop-off.

I think it does become eye-of-the-beholder after the top 5 or so. I'd still give Kasparas some benefit of the doubt, but those guys you mentioned have a solid floor as well as star-level upside.

bro. Kasparas is good. I think there's a very solid chance he has a better career than VJ.
