Jackpotting Around - The Great Walker Kessler Debate

The one thing I'm skeptical about a long term Walker play in Utah is we don't have the type of primary PNR player who really maximizes Walker's offensive value.

Maybe Keyonte or Clayton get there a bit. No way Collier does. Definitely if we draft Peterson.

Nuggets should have plenty of space to sign Braun and stay under second apron.

They like to avoid the tax when they can so I think they could get sensitive if someone got crazy with Braun. Like if someone went to 30M or something.

I also think Braun, Murray will sign extensions. I think the RFA with be like Mathurin, Ivey, Duren, Kessler, prolly some others.

The Nuggets trade for Cam Johnson was incredibly clutch because it gave them a ton of money to fill out the roster this year + sign Braun in the futre. If MPJ was still there, you could make the Nuggets sweat and maybe push them over the second apron. You would pretty much need to max Braun to do that now and even then they could still be under the second apron.

You could push them into the tax....personally I'm not gonna waste any time considering Braun as an option next summer.

I had this thought and we didn't quite get to it. I think this is a mark in his favor tbh. He's the kind of guy who would thrive with good setup men... and he may have had like the worst setup men in the league. Zubac has definitely improved but he is also playing with Harden and its contributed to his glow up.

So a team like the Lakers may think they will get more out of Walker on that end.

I mean anyone who listened know I have my eye on a guy out here in Sacramento (he may get extended tho) and it ain't Keegan lol.

The RFA I'd be looking to sign if he doesn't get an extension is Tari Eason. Not sure if he was mentioned, but I think he's more obtainable than Braun for sure.
I mentioned him.

Eason
Keon Ellis
Quentin Grimes
Ayo Dosunmu

are guys I'd be interested in. None are 30M a year guys.

Reaves, Coby White... I'd have some interest but I think the price could get wild for Reaves.

Simons, Sexton (hilarious), Ivey?

Like its not some huge, amazing list. Walker gets to FA healthy then he will get paid.

He might be a better player than Braun tbh....but since nothing good happens for us he will be a part of the inevitable Kuminga midseason trade.
I mean if he gets the Caruso whistle... might be AC+. I think they can go up to MLE or close to it for his extension but he will be unrestricted. He would be top of my list as he would fit just about any backcourt partner.

I don't know if maxing him is insane. If you essentially get him for just cap space rather than paying him a ton and trading a ton for him. I just think that is the nature of FA though. If you are going to get the guy you must pay the premium. I think he's more likely headed to Brooklyn, Wash, or Atlanta ponies up. Could also see some sign and trade scenarios coming up.

I guess I'll say this... he's the only max worthy guy I think we could actually get into a conversation with. Lebron is a FA too...KD likely signs an extension... but those aren't worth discussing.

The rest of the guys are likely well within reach even if we signed Walker to an extension.
I like where you're at conceptually—but I'll never be on the side of people who are trying to sign Trae Young.

I definitely get it. He isn't my favorite. I guess the concept where I could be in is if you land AJ Dybansta and Ace looks good on defense. Like I could see Young, Ace, AJ, Taylor (Lauri), Kessler being a playoff team with young building blocks. He's such a good passer that I think he could open up a lot of stuff and you'd have a bunch of long athletic toolsy wings.

Its more of a "we are getting impatient and you can see something here if you squint". I think there would be a ton of nights where I can't stand watching the guy foul grift.

Good news is it isn't happening (I think).

He might be....on paper he's a lot better than Braun. If we could unite the analytics gods (Eason and Ellis) we might be onto something. Reality is we're probably shooting for guys like Ivey and Mathurin.

I mean Ainge getting his guy Quentin Grimes has to be it right?

I can see Ellis getting like 10M a year and me losing my mind it wasn't us.

I think that there is a chance they just don't like his player type and don't want to commit to it... my issue is then they should absolutely trade him. He will improve but I doubt he's gonna go Brook Lopez. By waiting they will subject themselves to another team valuing his services above what they are offering now. Maybe he gets squeezed but I doubt it as long as he's healthy. I think every cap space team would have interest in him and depending on how extensions play out... he may be the top RFA that teams see as gettable.

Its hard to value a guy at 2 firsts plus Reaves in a trade.... and also break off contract negotiation talks because the guy isn't willing to take a deep discount.

Just for reference. My guess is the Jazz are willing to do it at 20M but Walker is asking 30M. But I think Walker is still willing to talk. Logically anywhere from 23-28M seems doable if parties kept talking. Maybe stack a couple million in incentives there for all-defense. If you don't value him at that number then you should have traded him. Kind of a **** or get off the pot ya know.
These negotiations often take time. Kessler’s agent is pushing the price up, as he should, to see how high he can go. Eventually, they’ll reach a deal. I say this because I'm pretty sure AA wants to sign him to a long-term contract.
