Cody Williams Hype and Appreciation Thread

Yeah, he’s got no business on an NBA floor at this point.

G League him for the rest of the season, see if he can adopt a more aggressive mentality.

Realistically he looks like an overseas role player.

I don't think it's about whether Cody has an aggressive mentality. It's a question of whether Cody ever becomes a good enough shooter and scorer in an NBA scheme to justify putting him on the floor. Otherwise, defenders will just ignore him.

For Cody, it really is all about whether he can make enough shots.

I wonder if Cody gets to play in the middle of the floor in the G league and suddenly his offense looks better. He seems really uncomfortable playing out of the corners.

I agree with you. Cody is a guy who is used to having the ball and playing out on the floor. He then builds rhythm and confidence in his shooting over the course of a game. The problem is -- that's not what an NBA team is going to ask him to do. Cody isn't going to take on-ball reps away from Keyonte or Isaiah, and he's not going to take shots away from Lauri, Brice, or anyone else. Offensively, he's the 4th or 5th guy on the floor, and he needs to adapt himself to being a shooter off the catch.

What Cody did in college or in Summer League isn't relevant. In the NBA, he needs to play like Royce O'Neale (for lack of a better example). He needs to guard 2 - 4 and make open shots. He isn't good enough to be a significant on-ball creator at the NBA level.

Well, since you seem to put a lot of faith in the OFRTG and DEFRTG at this point... Cody Williams currently has a higher offensive rating then Lauri, but Markkanen (together with Flip and Nurkic) has a much higher DEFRTG. I think we need either to get rid of this inefficient offensive player Markkanen or tell him to focus more on defense, where he truly shines - while Cody can power the Jazz offense alongside Harkless (who has the 2nd highest offensive rating).

Offrtg and defrtg are team stats. It's how well the team is performing while someone is playing. By calling someone a tank commander you are saying that they are singlehandedly bringing the team down. Cody hasn't done that so far. He hasn't been a good tank commander because we have mostly been fine with him on the court.

My belief is that it's very difficult to have a large effect on losing when you have almost no usage and play good defense (relative to the team). That's pretty much what has happened so far this year.

Maybe it was just a matter of time that teams start being more aggressive about playing off him. So maybe moving forward he'll have a more negative impact. We'll see. So far he hasn't though.

Cody’s +\- stuff isn’t *that* bad this season, but I think that has more to do with SSS than him mitigating losing value by not having a large role. Over his entire career he’s had very low usage but horrible +/- impact.

Cody is like Kyle Anderson without the craftiness and confidence. Last chance but he continues to get minutes and hopefully he’s getting that kind of mentoring cause Slo Mo 2.0 has a certain ring to it.

He's nothing like Anderson...
That’s funny cause the big knock against him is too slow and unathletic. Basically the same height within thirty pounds or so. A guy that’s made a name and a nickname for himself over eleven seasons with the same deficits sounds like a perfect mentor/model to me.

Cody's issue is that he isnt good at basketball mostly.

He does look slow, but he isnt slow as an athlete. He's slow with the ball in his hands because he cant dribble.
