Black Power!

White people have been bringing down black people for centuries and using the N word. They've been compared to apes and porchmonkey's with that term. The same can't be said about any word that describes a white person. Of course I think it only matters what context the word is used in, like saying it in a rap song or w/e is ok in my opinion (even though I'm not black and it's only my opinion) but saying it as an insult to someone is a different story.

Saying the history and context of a word not being important is ignorant.

So Sex and the f word can be used interchangeably since they mean the same thing?

By centuries you probably mean a couple hundred years dominance that ran counter to the previous 6800, when black, white, yellow, red, orange, tan, olive, and brown all enslaved each other and kept green martians happy by building pyramids and other really cool phallic displays.

I feel unprepared to jump into this thread without looking at the exchanges a little more closely...

But, here goes.

The modern enslavement of Africans by Europeans is, when you look at the historical record, not comparable to, say, Roman slavery or any other known form. It happened on a scale and at a pace unknown before. And, never had slavery had such genocidal tendencies. Look into the history of the slave trade; you'll be shocked to see how many are thought to have died.

Also, based on what I'm seeing in the pic thread, listening to a bunch of white dudes talk about racism is interesting, but most of us should be honest and recognize our own limitations on this topic. I'll never forget my first prolonged exposure to a culture in which I was a visual minority... it totally twisted my head around to different nuances of these issues. Moreover, most of us would laud a lot of the social, structural features that help racism to endure, e.g. politics based on representation.

I don't think the right reaction to PDiddy is to immediately throw his statement onto the dualism of "good"-"bad". For me, the POTENTIAL of Black Power is interesting. Afro-American resistance to the dominant order has, since day one, produced some of the most beautiful and intense music, literature, etc. Is it likely that PDiddy's "revolution" is watered down by corporatist/market mentality? Maybe. But, I'll be looking for differences and their potential.

Racial pride is a good thing. Take pride in who you are and where you come from. When the bad apples turn that into a rascist thing is when they ruin it.

I didn't reall think PDiddy was being rascist just an idiot.

It's Puff Daddy for ****s sake! Who cares?! Even original Black Panthers face palmed when he said that ****.

I don't endorse this. Nor do I endorse the idea of a "bad apple" as some kind of essence.

I could have said a lot more in my earlier post, but, essentially, "black power" need not be limited to an expression of people with a certain phenotype. It's a complex aggregate of resistance. I participate, and I'm not "black". This is possible.

Basically, **** with things and see how they work. Use "race" for what it has become, but not out of any kind of pride.

You should've said, "Why don't you stop acting like a bunch of ****ing n******." And I'm dead serious. Most of that mentality when they do that is posturing or pack mentality and if you said it in the right tone, your point would have been made and they would have been so startled, they would have **** themselves.

I'm being dead serious by the way.

Fight racism with racism, brilliant idea old chap!

(The black people at my gym just try to shoot step back 3pointers all day, I enjoy it as it makes them extremely easy to guard).

You bring up a lot of good interesting points. As for the pride in your race, I still stand by that. Be proud of who you are and where you came from. I am proud to be a white american. But I think a black man from Brazil should be just as proud to be what he is as I am what I am.

Edit: I compeltely reject rascism and all that goes with it. I love different cultures and my biggest goal in life is to go to all these unique places and sample that culture and race if you will.

For some reason this thread takes me back to my childhood, and a very specific place in that childhood.
Ok, to the race laced jokes that everyone laughed at no matter the "color". Everyone in my case would be my friends of multiple races.
Keep in mind no offense was taken from these jokes then, but now it seems to be a different story.

Ok, this is the one.

What do you call a group of "caucasian americans" pushing a car? White Power!
What do you call a group of "african americans" pushing a car? Black Power!
What do you call a group of "mexican americans" pushing a car? clue -----> 3 word answer/punchline

Things were much simpler when I was a kid and could think it was funny and not see how someone could be offended by things like this.

My best friend is Muslim. I call him a sand ****** all the time. He calls me a mormon **** and everyone is happy.

There's a difference between joking about stereotypes, races, etc in the right place and under the right situation than just being a racist dick that thinks your race is better than others.

That could be it. We all had fun with it and knew we were just messing around and didn't really believe it.
It was probably okay because we knew each other.
I'm sure if I joked around with someone I didn't know it would not have gone well.

Makes you wonder what Vizzini would say about Lin...
You have given out too much Reputation in the last 24 hours, try again later.

What's your brilliant solution? To stand by and let them do it? To report it to gym personnel who will do absolutely nothing other than perhaps laugh at you? The fact of the matter is, people need to take a stand for what's right and calling these dip****s a bunch of n****** is doing nothing other than stating the truth, unless perhaps you don't know the definition of the word. Grow a ****ing pair.
