Gun Control

As far as #16 goes, the patient does not have to answer. Some good moves, some pointless ones, won't hurt but probably wont help that much either. I do like #9, criminals dont need guns. If you can find a way to take guns from criminals I'm all for it.

To me that would depend on the crime.

Obama released a list of actions he wants to take:

1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system. - agreed

2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system. - agreed

3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system. - fine

4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make sure dangerous people are not slipping through the cracks. - fine

5. Propose rulemaking to give law enforcement the ability to run a full background check on an individual before returning a seized gun. - overdue

6. Publish a letter from ATF to federally licensed gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers. - fine

7. Launch a national safe and responsible gun ownership campaign. - need more info

8. Review safety standards for gun locks and gun safes (Consumer Product Safety Commission). - fine

9. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal law enforcement to trace guns recovered in criminal investigations. - Not sure I like this

10. Release a DOJ report analyzing information on lost and stolen guns and make it widely available to law enforcement. - fine

11. Nominate an ATF director. - long overdue. It has been 6 years...

12. Provide law enforcement, first responders, and school officials with proper training for active shooter situations. - yes

13. Maximize enforcement efforts to prevent gun violence and prosecute gun crime. - fine

14. Issue a Presidential Memorandum directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence. - fine

15. Direct the Attorney General to issue a report on the availability and most effective use of new gun safety technologies and challenge the private sector to develop innovative technologies. - good idea

16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes. - none of my Drs. damn business. Bad idea, NO

17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities. - good idea

18. Provide incentives for schools to hire school resource officers. - yes

19. Develop model emergency response plans for schools, houses of worship and institutions of higher education. - fine

20. Release a letter to state health officials clarifying the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover. - How does this belong here?

21. Finalize regulations clarifying essential health benefits and parity requirements within ACA exchanges. - Does not belong here

22. Commit to finalizing mental health parity regulations. - fine

23. Launch a national dialogue led by Secretaries Sebelius and Duncan on mental health. - fine

Keep in mind this is his list of "executive actions" not a list of what he wants ongress to pass.

So it looks like you are "fine" with or like most of these ideas, and you seem to be on the side of not wanting much gun control.
So like i said earlier.... gun lovers have nothing to worry about, nothing to see here, move along

Many of the ideas he presented in that list are not new gun rules. They simply streamline and make more effective what is there. Some have no affect on gun control. Such as a Dr asking if you have weapons, school resource officers, the CDC studying guns, starting a dialogue on mental health...

Again this is not what Obama wants to push thru congress. Alot of those ideas I very much disagree with. Such as clip limits, banning "assault" rifles, banning certain types of ammo...

I may be mistaken on this, but I seem to recall at some point in the fairly recent past there was a thread that discussed this very thing, after the AMA and the Pediatricians group (don't know the initials) proposed the policy as a matter of public health. Seems to me that most of those who oppose restrictions were pretty vehemently against this, even though it has little to do with actual restrictions on gun ownership.

It could lead to de facto gun control via economics. It gets put in your medical record-live in household with gun. Makes it to insurance company and rates go up.

I believe you are correct that this was discussed on here earlier. I am against it for two main reasons.

1. It is none of my doctors damn business and I would politely tell one so if I was ever asked.
2. Me owning a firearm in no way affects my health.

I thought it was more about if you were seeing a doctor for mental health issues and he thought that you might be a threat to go on a killing spree, then he would ask if you own a gun to try to protect innocent lives.

I doubt a doctor would ask you if you have a gun if you were just going to the doctor cause you had a runny nose and a cough.

I may be mistaken, but I believe the original intent behind the idea was that pediatricians would ask during a child's visit, and then offer follow-up suggestions on gun safety matters

I guess whatever the intent, or whatever the situation.... the way i look at is: if a doctor asks you if you own a gun, and you dont want him to know that you do, then you just tell the doctor "no". Pretty simple solution for me.

Back when i smoked ciggarettes (i have not smoked for years now) when i filled out forms at the doctors and there was a question asking if i smoke, i always checked the box for no.
Aint nobody got time for insurance rates increasing!

Here is how I feel about controlling my gun:

The trick comes with strengthening your Pubococcygeus muscle. Upon months of working out, you will find that your lifestyle will improve to the extent where one only fires when the situation is absolutely drastic and/or desired.

Some food for thought. Carry on, gentlemen.

It affects the probability someone in your family will die this year. Having a doctor discuss this with you is one way of a) providing regular reminders of the importance of safety b) in a confidential environment.

There ya go... compare our president to hitler. Good job scat, you are a great american.

BTW i dont have a problem with our president being nice to and having fun with kids.. i actually think that is a good quality in a person. To each thier own i guess.

I'm sure the Germans said similar things back when Hitler did the exact same thing.

What's that saying about history repeating itself?

I agree wholeheartedly with you. That said, what Obama did today, using kids as a prop to push an agenda, is not a good quality in a person.

Please get your facts straight - they're not kids, they're crisis actors.
