yah, I was 31 when I got kicked out of school for taking all the required classes for four degrees....... ha ha.
Seriously, i stopped out for an LDS mission, then for a job, and then for being sick. . . . and had to take it slow coming back.
And then I worked in those UofU labs where Ph.D.'s from India, Taiwan, and Korea hang out for years so they won't have to go home, even though they earn minimum wage. I hoped to get back in to Graduate School. But I stayed too long, and after debunking about five Ph.D. theses and exposing a couple of fraudulent scientific papers, I was told I should go into industry where truth actually matters.
And then after going into industry, I ruined my hopes of finding a home with similarly dysfunctional antics like realizing the company I was working for was either illegally supplying the meth labs, defrauding suppliers and customers, or using the government to perform creditor-defrauding magic tricks on the billion-dollar scale.
well, maybe I won't find a home on JF either.
Once in a while I want to go back to school, maybe get a teacher's certificate or something and start a school where I can impact a new generation of Americans. . . .
But reality has been staring me in the face all along, and the best thing to do is start a business of your own that actually has voluntary customers willing to pay you more for what you do that it costs you to do it. And maybe I've made it, finally.
screw retirement, I'm having fun now, and even my wife is thinking I'm doing something good.

You'd make a great teacher, babe.
Gameface, do you have a specific job you want to pursue with your degree? I have a friend with a degree in English and she has had to go for a masters in another field to get a sufficiently remunerative job to support her family.
Some advice would be to get to know your professors; talk to them during office hours, ask questions and seek their help so they know you....this is one thing that was a problem for her since she had been out of school for so long they wouldn't remember her.
Why does it matter if her professors know her?
As of right now I don't know what I want to do. As I get a little further I'll start scoping out potential career fields and work towards that.
BTW, it's been a long time since I've seen you around here. Welcome back.
not sure if this is what Pearl meant (howdy, btw) but at some schools the professors can play a big role to help you connect with good internship and even job opportunities
particularly if you have adjunct and/or part-time instructors who are still employed outside of the university

I've decided to go back to school as well. Our situations aren't exactly similar, but I've come to realize how much my whole identity was centered around being a stock trader over the years. So when I would have good days in the markets, I would get a momentary high. When I had bad days in the markets, I was kind of just miserable. Even when I had good days that were good by anyone's standards, if they weren't good according to what I did a few days ago, I would feel like my world was ending until the next really good day. It literally felt like I was on drugs at times. And the "dosage" needed to be higher as time went on to gain any joy from it. And you get into this whole mindset that you need to hoard money in your accounts so that you can have more money to trade to make even more money. And basically the joy was only short lived anyway. Essentially I became consumed by that world for a few years and have slowly been climbing my way out as I find myself more. I don't want to be defined as a stock trader anymore. Or a money junkie.
I gained some monetary benefits, but I also became obsessed at times and it destroyed parts of my life. You become isolated. When somebody asks how that date went Tuesday night....and you say, "Great." when in reality you bailed on that date so you could wake up early to trade foreign stock markets.....you might have problem. I'm not totally bailing on stock trading. I've been working on a different trading system for a couple of years that is allowing me to escape while still enjoying some of the benefits of what I know how to do. I'm just not going to trade as actively as I have been. And I'm quitting sports betting completely. I want stock trader to be like number 20 on the list of things people describe me being as. It's still too high now.
Anyway, that one decision has been soul freeing to me so I wanted to share. As I've been adding classes and realizing that I'm finally getting away from my old ways completely, and starting to re-build a more diversified life, it's helped. If any of you are chasing money or working in a field that you aren't in love with and finding it completely hollow, I hear you. Make changes. It's not worth it.
