The way McGary is playing makes me think what Kanter could have looked like if he was eligible to play for UK.
And Kanter was the 3rd pick. So...

McGary with the Jazz pick!
Hahaha.. yeah man! We'll have the best young front court in the West for sure!
Comparing McGary to Kanter is asinine. If I have to actually explain why, then it's beyond you. David Lee is a better comparison to McGary, albeit Lee is more athletic.
I also don't get the love affair with MCW here. The kid can't shoot, and that is a huge, huge issue. Plus, kids coming out of Syracuse have a huge learning curve when it comes to defense because all they've played is a 2-3 zone, we don't really know how well they'll be able to play in a man-to-man situation. Anyways, MCW is much like Kendall Marshall. Everybody thought Marshall had magically learned how to shoot the basketball last year because of the ACC tournament and NCAA tournament. They were wrong. MCW is just a taller, more athletic Marshall, and after seeing Marshall play this year, I don't see how anybody can want that on our team. I get that we all want a pass-first PG because we had Stockton for so long, but you guys have to realize that the NBA is changing. Those types of guys aren't necessarily needed anymore.
McGary looks like he could be a mid first-rounder, in part because he's 6'10". His game is pretty limited, but he's tough and has a good IQ. Yeah, maybe you could compare him to David Lee. I was also thinking that he plays a Tyler Hansbrough kind of role, but he's a tad bigger and seems a bit more versatile. He'll probably end up a back-up PF in the NBA.
You're talking about Marshall like his career is already written. He's a rookie and has greatly improved (not as a shooter) as the season's gone on all the while playing for a crap team in complete turmoil. Marshall's ability to impact the game at the collegiate level was his selling point (which was vast and undeniable), I don't think the same can be said for MCW (his selling point is as much his potential as it is anything).
If the point you're trying to make is that players (perimeter players, specifically) need to be able to make shots, I don't disagree. But our love of John Stockton doesn't really work as a comparison as Stockton was a wildly efficient player and you couldn't really guard off of him.
Getting to the heart of the point, I am very lukewarm on MCW. And really only as a consolation.
McGary has more assists than Burke and MCW combined at half. David Lee is a good comparison for McGary to me.
I don't like it because David Lee is a ****ty defender. Let's all try to remember that this one half of one game.

I just don't see Marshall as ever being a legit starting PG. Can't play defense and he can't shoot.
In regards to Stockton, I definitely agree that he was a very efficient player who could score well. There's not a doubt in my mind that he could have averaged 20 ppg for the majority of his career if he wanted to. I was more getting to the point that a lot of Jazz fans seem to think that all we need is a pass first PG to succeed, and while there's nothing wrong with a pass first PG, I think they do need to show the ability to score, and Marshall/MCW do not show that ability.
Have you seen him play at all in the tournament before this game? Your right though, he is like a David Lee on offense but not on defense.
