What's new

Can you get an alert for when someone is quoting you or your name is mentioned?

Agree. Have had plenty of ups and downs ... started with nothing (as a kid, days without eating... two tops)..... all my fondest memories are from the poor times.. making due, pretending we weren't poor.. fishing, a lot.

I recall those days, now, when my kids look bored or too much in front of the video games/computer.... they never gripe once we're out doing cool stuff, as a family..

PKM, didn't you say you were a 3rd generation UK booster? How does that reconcile with your story about being poor, etc, etc, etc?

Why do you think he would go days without eating? Pops would give all their food money to the basketball team.

Broken family. And I'll leave it at that is it's okay.

Ah.. ok. I've always thought you were born into Money.

Like, literally swimming in it...

I guess I'll have to cut you some slack next time.

I had a 7th grade social studies teacher who said if you took all the wealth in the world and split it up evenly within 20 years most of the poor people would be poor again and most of the rich people would be rich again. Pretty sure he was just talking out of his ***, but to some extent I bet it's true.

It's not the money. It's how you use it.

It's easy to say, "Oh the poor are just lazy".

But when you're rooted in poverty, it's just so hard to get out of it. You just don't know any better. You just don't have the opportunity to succeed. The movie "The Blindside" is actually a good example of how, if someone is given an opportunity, with the right amount of support, someone who comes from poverty can also succeed.

Fwiw, I come from tons of money on one side.. and totally broke family on the other. The total amount of help I got is zero. No money, no car, no help with loans, no education, nothing. Not even access to networking. What I have done was completely from zero... and when the wealthy side passes on it only gets better. LOL - no way I out survive anyone.

This type of reasoning makes me want to pull every hair out of my head. Why has society given up on win-win...

No **** the best of best will rise to the top, but why do these teachers have to get so ideologically black and white about it? Why is everyone so obsessed with creating a degradative atmosphere that's horrible for everyone?

I'm compulsive..

I don't think the teacher meant any harm by it though. It made the student think which is the main thing. The fact that GF listened to it, thought about it, and formed an opinion different to the teacher, to me, is a success story.

He was a horrible teacher who threw tantrums regularly and often commented on how he had a degree in urban planning but could only get a job as a teacher. He explained his rich v poor theory to us before three days of playing Monopoly, first the regular way, then socialist Monopoly, then communist Monopoly. It was fun, one of the guys I got teamed up with was all about how Mike Tyson could bang any chick he wanted because he was Mike Tyson so obviously the girl wanted it. This was right after Tyson got arrested.

...degradative...

I don't think I can pronounce that word, it's a tongue twister!

but I think I agree with what you said - prudent money management skills are not an inherent part of human nature, and if they're not taught, they won't be followed

that idea of capitalist, socialist and communist versions of Monopoly is intriguing!

No surprise he left out a day of laissez faire monopoly (and the losers serving the one winner for the next month). Indoctrination, Utah public education style.

Still not sure it's a word, but spell check gave approval..

I like teachers who make you think, and it seems to me this guy likes to think outside the box. You were privileged to have had him.

... some people are born into broken family, abusive family, poor family, they don't have any chance at education and don't know any better. It can be really hard to "make life".

Yet some still find a way.

I'm not saying it isn't hard or that everyone can overcome disadvantage, but in order to succeed you've got to try and you've got to believe it's possible.

I think a popular misconception is that success is easy for successful people. Successful people often work really damn hard for a really long time in order to achieve the success they have.

No doubting that. But if you have a twin, 1 kid gets to live with PKM, 1 kid lives with abusive parents, broken home, half-brothers are gang members doing drugs... it will take a Herculean effort for that 2nd kid to become successful. On the other hand, the kid that lives with PKM would probably get to go to a good school, go to college, be paid $$$ to study pretty much.

I guess my point is if the 2nd kid needed a Herculean effort to become successful, shouldn't we as a society be giving him a hand?

Sure, you're repeating the misconception that the first kid has everything handed to them. They'll get all that paid for and so fourth but daddy-PKM isn't going to be doing the kids homework or showing up at the office 80 hrs a week for the kid.

I've had countless opportunities fall in my lap and I've pretty much pissed them all away. You could hand me advantages all day long and I'd find a way to not succeed, pretty much because I don't like doing things that are hard (there are a lot of things that come easy to me, and I tend to focus my efforts on those things, even though they're usually not profitable) and I honestly can't imagine how much someone would have to pay me to make working 80hrs a week seem worthwhile. I'd rather live in a gutter than make 100K+ working 80hrs a week.
