You should really read the transcript of his interview, but essentially he said he believes the Jazz aren't interested in him because they have Burke and just signed John Lucas III --thinks he won't get playing time. This kind of irks me. Would we really play John Lucas III over Neto --I'd hope not. It would be a shame to see his talent Tomic'd.

He would get more minutes in Spain. Getting experience on their dime isn't a bad deal. If waits a year his rookie year starts later so the Jazz get to keep him a year longer. It is essentially "why pay money so we can develop someone here when he can get just as much developed in Spain." One can even argue he would get developed more in Spain or else he might take away some development from Trey.

I've heard all of those arguments, and acknowledge their points, but still disagree.

We are in full rebuild mode right now, and if Neto is a part of our future, he should build those bonds now. Why should he be put on an unequal playing field than Burke? Because of draft selection? It is not like Neto is going to play in Spain and learn our sets and the ticks and preferences of Jazz players. I think we are doing his development a disservice by putting him over there. If it was a matter of who is more NBA ready, SL showed us that Neto is. If we intend Neto to be the backup to Burke, why not start now? Is Burke going somewhere else next season (doubt it)? I don't see any reason why John Lucas can't just be who is paid to be --a calming presence in the locker room and on the bench.

I mean, if our F/O is so dead-set on handing over the keys to Burke, why does it matter if Neto comes over this year? If Burke is our starter of the future and Neto is the backup, why can't they assume the roles now? It seems like the F/O is afraid of the competition, how Burke might not be as good as their 2nd round pick, which might make them look bad --is that the real reason why they signed a hack like JLIII? Weak.

I am all for letting our young guys play (and have been from day one, because they were actually better), but PG is the most sacred spot on our team and we are just handing it over to this kid? Stockton and D-Will earned their stripes.

End of rant.

right decision by neto

corbin's doghouse is not the best place to start a career for a young guy

Maybe it means he takes 3 years in Spain until he isn't bound any longer to the rookie scale if he doesn't come over right away.

Trey didn't perform as good as we had hoped so everyone is now clamoring for Raul Neto. If Raul makes it in the NBA he would be an exception not a rule to a mid second round pick. Why buyout someone who has a small chance of making the team down the line when you already have a rookie point guard.

Well I think it is obvious that the Jazz want Neto because they traded for him. However, I think this is a good idea. If he comes over now then you have to make a decision about paying him sooner if he pans out. He is also a safety net if Burke isn't the player most people think he is or if Burke breaks out and then decides he wants to play in a big market or if he wants a max contract and the Jazz can't afford him.

Neto needs to work on his shot and body. Something he can do over in Europe. The kid has natural basketball instincts. I have no doubt that he will pick up the Jazz offense (once they decided what offense they will run) quickly when he gets to the NBA. As much as I would like to see the kid in a Jazz uniform, I think having him play in Spain a year or two more would be best for his development. If the Jazz sit him behind Lucas III then the kid's development will be delayed or even take a step back.

he was a second round pick he is not bound to the rookie scale

They are bound to a rookie scale for their 1st contract. After that they are still bound to certain amount until they serve more than 4 years. For instance, Wesley Matthews is currently on a max contract for his experience (when he signed).

In theory we could sign Neto to any deal under the Salary Cap up to 25% of the cap.

Second round picks are governed by the same rules as undrafted free agents and the 'Gilbert Arenas Rule' if they are restricted free agents.

See question 17 too.

Restricted free agency applies

See question 44 for info on gilbert arenas rule. This is what applied to Wesley Matthews.

Makes me sad. It's almost as if they didn't want them both over at the same time for fear that Neto would outperform Burke creating a point guard controversy.

What the ****?

Minny a few years back? How'd it work for them?
You mean Ricky Rubio, Johnny Flynn & Ty Lawson?

The first PG out of 3 PG's they picked looks to be working out very well for them (all their PG's picked in the first round and two in the lottery). Now the last one they picked they traded to DNV and he also looks to be a good albeit a bit undersized.

Another similarity is one of the PG's stayed playing in Spain for another year and now looks like he could be the best best of the 3.

Yet another similarity is one of the PG's played in the NCAA National Championship and also won the Bob Cousy award before being drafted. This PG also looks to be a good starting quality PG in the NBA.

Now as for the middle PG picked, he is fighting to stay in the league, although why does that matter since the Jazz only picked two PG's. So then what does all this mean and all these similarities.......uhmmm I'm guessing nothing since the Jazz are handling their situation differently on top of any similarities are coincidental and wont really matter because it all apples and oranges comparison.

But that could've been the point of your question all along.

Oh and as for the Neto vs Tomic comparisons? The situation is nothing like Tomic's, Neto has said numerous times that he wants to and will come to play in the NBA, whereas Tomic is already making a lot of money and is an established borderline "star" player in his league and team and has made no such claims other then to say he stays in contact and monitors the Jazz's situation.

He was a 2nd round pick. He was chosen as a "project" - a "draft and stash." Why are so many clamoring to have him come over? He had a few good moments in SL. So did Stockton and many others. But he also struggled a lot. He needs work on his game and the best way to do that is to play a lot of minutes. He'll get that in Spain. From the outset, DL made it fairly clear the intent was to leave him in Spain.
