Trey Burke highlights v. GSW

I could see that argument except that TB took more shots than anyone on the team(14 next closest was hayward with 12). I don't think he should be the guy taking the most shots. He had the ball in his hands enough he just chose to shoot.

Agree with this, and said as much, and then caught a **** storm from people misinterpretting Hayward's playmaking role this season (which is to share the role, not usurp it).

Yeah, I agree with this. I think part of it is that after Trey made the initial 3 ptr and some follow up jump shots, he was trying to get some drives and layups - it's clearly an important part of his game and one that he's frustrated with adapting to the NBA. There were at least two PNRs that I recall where Trey had a lane, made the right call in driving due to the defense, and then was held up by help defenders at the rim.

If he gets that aspect to his game, we would have been looking at a 7/14, 16 pt performance instead of a 5/14 12 pt performance, which would be - by far - the best rookie preseason debut this year. As it stands, that honor goes to Oladipo who had 9 ****ing assists and shot 4/8.

Just to be clear, I think Hayward SHOULD usurp it for the time being. How much of the offense has been put in so far? 20%? Until Trey knows all the geometric patterns like the back of his hand, Hayward will be better off being the primary playmaker.

You act like the choice to shoot is made in a silo that is independent from any reality on the court. Trey has to make the choice over whether to shoot or not based on how defenses respond to the pick and roll. Clearly (and with good reason) the defense seemed to prefer letting Trey drive over committing on Trey and leaving Favors, Kanter, or Hayward open for a roll or pop.

From what I saw, Trey made the right decision based on the defense's response - he just didn't finish.

My two concern is him having only 3 assists and shooting 0 FTs. He needs to draw the foul instead of shooting off balance and bring those assists up.

This, more or less! I wasn't able to watch the game, but I got the idea that he was forcing shots and moving into chucker territory. Correct me if I'm wrong. He definitely should not have taken that last three since there were 15 seconds left on the shot clock; he should have driven to the basket. He showed good speed though, so that's exciting. Overall, it was a successful game for him. I think this game was more of an instinct game in that he relied on his basketball instincts and present skills, rather than trying to change things around a lot. Looks promising, but we'll see!

^This is just ridiculous. If Hayward is going to play point guard why play TB at all. You really think that relegating one of our best scorers to the role of playmaker is a good idea. TB needs to get the ball in Haywards hands because unlike TB we know Hayward can finish.

No no no! Of course he needs to keep the D honest but it's the drives inside that go nowhere that he needs to do less.

I disagree

His acceleration and speed looks really good in the position he set Evans for the dunk. The 3 he nailed from Hayward's assist is really promising view.

Couple bad shots but never felt like he was chucking at all.

Disagree wholeheartedly. Gordon and Kanter are our best scorers. if Gordon is always playmaking for others, that just leaves isos for him, which is an impossible task when he isn't great in them, isn't used to them, and is the only person the team that opponents have a scouting report/respect for so far. If our point, who usn't an efficient scorer yet, doesn't actually play the point, than this is going to be a really ugly season, and very unfair statistically to Gordon (who will see a lot more t/o's from double teams, and a decrease in fg % because he will be having to score a lot out of isos).

If Trey is to start, he needs to learn on the job. If he isn't ready to do half of the playmaking, he should come off the bench. Half isn't too much to ask. If he can't even give the team half, then the development of everyone around will suffer, and it would be better to start someone else at PG until Burke becomes ready.

I actually liked Trey's performance.

With that said, I would like to see Trey & Alec own and dominate the 2nd Unit.

We have enough scoring on 1st unit with Gtime, Favors & Kanter.

I know it was just a preseason game but Corbin needs to start subbing Hayward with 3 min left in 1st and bring him back with 6 in the second. Playing the entire 1st and coming in with 2 minutes left in the second (he did that last year as well) is pointless.

Can't even work up a sweat in 2 mins.

Just my .02

I saw Corbin put Burke in situations in which he was likely to succeed, throwing a lot of the "team running" onto Hay. I have no problem with this. Get him comfortable doing what he does well, then add other stuff.

One thing is for sure: I'm not gonna site stats from one pre-season game as evidence of __________

No thanks.

I'd rather see him build chemistry with Hayward, Kanter and Favors. Plus you can't have 2 alpha dogs in the same cage (Burks and Burke).

Frankly, I was more impressed with three plays:

3. The curl around Kanter from the baseline and shot.

The last was impressive because he made something out of nothing - his passing lane and driving lane had been cut off on a fast break, so he just sprinted around Kanter and made it happen.

He's going to be good. And I bet he'll be great.

I want to talk about this play (from :51 to 1:13 or so in the video).

This is a terrible play by Burke. If anything this belongs on a Kanter highlight reel.

Burke appears to overpursue a fastbreak opportunity and instead of backing it out and playing halfcourt he keeps going to the rim and puts himself in a terrible situation where he has to jump to pass. It just so happens that Kanter is there and aware. The ensuing basket happens because of Kanter's excellent pick that generates the pin-down.

I understand we got two points, but Burke did not play that possession well.

Additionally, I don't see this team being a true contender if Burke dominates the ball and especially not if the Jazz land a mega-talent on the perimeter in the next year. Burke's ability to shoot off the ball is/was one of the reasons that I like(d) him.

...And just for fun, here are some Dennis Schroeder highlights. It's looking like he'll be a good player too.
