How so? If the Jazz held Vonleh, Gordon, Smart, and possibly Randle in the same tier, wouldn't it give a bump to players like A? Gordon & Smart who have an incredible amount of upside as well, yet fill positions that will make the team, as constructed, better. If the team has nothing but bigs, how can any of them get better?

W/ Tomic, Jazz would have contracts, or FA interest (as w/ Marvin) w/:

Favors
Kanter
Tomic
Gobert
M. Thomas
E. Murphy
J. Evans
M. Williams

I personally think Evans & M. Williams should be 3's, but from interviews as recently as this past weekend, Lindsey likes Marvin at the 4, and seems high on resigning him.

E. Murphy & M. Thomas are likely scrubs and replaceable, but the decision still has to be made.

J. Evans is also near and dear to the organization w/ his personality, field work w/ offseason camps, winning the dunk contest, and being Hayward's closest friend on the roster (as they still need to ink Hayward, even if they are secretly entertaining sign and trades).

This is 8 players the Jazz classify as bigs and need to make decisions on. Why would they add a 9th via the draft without it weighing its repercussions? They'd have to view Vonleh or Randle as clearly superior to those they already have, and to be honest, Randle is clearly not better, and The vonleh answer is blurry.
 
I really don't get why people think Favors is undersized at the 5. Favors was listed as heavier than all but 7 starting centers this season, and his standing reach is right in the middle of the pack. Dude has better than average size at the 5.

personally, I can't see the Jazz buying out one of the best PF/Cs in Europe unless they plan on giving him significant minutes. That alone will make minutes for Tomic hard to come-by with a rotation of Favors Kanter and Gobert-- throw Vonleh into the mix, and I'd have a hunch that someone is getting swapped if the Jazz buy-out Tomic.

Unless there is some master plan to trade Kanter to move up in the draft.

Well, whatever it is, he is a lot less effective when he defends the 5. He is beastly defending 4's, though. What is your theory for why it doesn't translate as well?

He's going to be better defending smaller players. He's not strong in the post for whatever reason (conditioning?). With that said, with Favors' sub-par offense, he's going to have to figure out how to be more than a pick-and-roll defender/help defender to make an impact in line with his salary. Playing him next to a beefy 5 with no O isn't going to work.

They don't have one. My point is that the Jazz need some offense from their frontline. Favors isn't giving it to them. He needs to be a more well-rounded defensive player so the Jazz can play an offensive specialist next to him. It's unlikely they find a Tim Duncan type who can be a plus on both defense at the 5 and on offense.

It's because he said it himself, IIRC. I can't find the article right now, but he said that he found it more difficult to defend centers this season than power forwards in previous seasons-- something to that tune.

that's what I'm saying. If they're confident that Kanter has peaked defensively, or they think they can get great value out of him, then now is the time to swap for a higher pick IMO (pending that you bring over Tomic, and draft Vonleh).

Personally, I'm expecting Kanter to have a way better season next year.
