Here is what Ford had to say yesterday about Exum:
I've been really impressed with Dante Exum. We knew he was going to be a major work in progress, but I think he's already a better player than Trey Burke, and there are flashes when you can see greatness -- a lot like what we saw from Giannis Antetokounmpo in his rookie season.

From everything I've seen from Exum, I think he has the chance to be a star.

Here is his redo on the draft.
1. Cavs - Andrew Wiggins
2. Bucks - Jabari Parker
3. Sixers - Dante Exum
4. Magic - Joel Embiid
5. Jazz - Aaron Gordon
6. Celtics - Marcus Smart
7. Lakers - Dario Saric
8. Kings - Elfrid Payton
9. Hornets - Jusuf Nurkic
10. Sixers - Julius Randle

Peltons redo is pretty much the same but puts smart one step ahead of Exum and says this
It's tough to evaluate how close Exum is to contributing because he's been put in such a small box by Quin Snyder.

I think this draft is going to take a long time to evaluate but will still go down as a good to great draft. There is still star power in this draft but might take time to see.

Nobody puts Baby in a Corner!

Exum isn't better than Burke this year, I don't care how bad Burke can be on defense.

I think all the Burke hate (along with huge leaps by Hayward and gobert) has made people not realize that he is improving slowly but surely.

Hard to judge Exum because he doesn't really do much. 60% of his shots are 3pt shots and he's only making 33% of them. He's a PG who averages less than 4 assists and less than 1 steal per 36. He shoots less than 1 FT each game.

Exum still might become a cross between Kobe, JKidd and Penny, but for now he's just kind of out there doing his job, hoisting threes and playing solid defense.

I really think the final 1/3 of the season Quin will let Exum go and play freely. When this happens he will have some ups and downs but we will really start to see the signs of being a good to great player.

Perhaps it is the rate that we are seeign others improve compared to Burke. But whatever the reason is I am still not seeing it. I'm starting to be disillusioned with him and I don't want to be.

The others improvements definitely cast a huge shadow over any little improvements trey makes...... but they are occurring nonetheless imo.

I really have liked seeing trey dribble into the paint and keep his dribble if nothing is available and come back out with his dribble intact. (Reminds me of what nash used to do in Phoenix)
He has found the big in the paint more often too (though not enough still) like last night throwing the oop to rudy.

Still shoots a bit too much and too poorly, but it seems like his shot is not as bad as it was earlier in the year

Trey has replaced two fadeaway bad jumpers with two tough layups/floaters. Which is a significant improvement.

OP can you expand on how Exum is put in a "small box" by Snyder? Quin has said he encourages Exum to be very aggressive.

I am usually very far from conspiracy theories, but when reading and listening to the things pundits like Ford say, I can't help but feel like they are being paid by management agencies to say some of the things they say.

That's one of the biggest misconceptions about Dante right now - that Quin is putting him in this role. No, it's not Quin! Quin has repeatedly stated that he wants him to be more aggressive, that he wants him to drive. It is not Quin! Right now, Dante is the one who's putting himself in the box of a catch-and-shoot one dimensional player.

I have not heard that from the coaching staff. I have heard them say they want him to play hard. I have heard and seen lots of quotes about them wanting to develop him slowly. Both Snyder and DL have made comments about taking their time and bringing him along slowly.

I dont think anyone knows what exactly the coaching staff wants from Snyder but it is clear they want him to do certain things on the court and do them well before worrying about other parts of his game. Snyder has done this with other players and will continue to do this. Maybe some of what his restrictions are self restrictions but not all of them.

Snyder said he wants him to come out of his shell and likes when he shows some emotion. He said he wants him to fight for the ball like its his last game. But I dont take that as he is not restricted as far as what the coaching staff wants him to do on the court.

Also DL has said multiple times that they are not sure which position Dante will play 1 or 2 and that playing/learning both is slowing his progression, but think that will help long term.

Stitches has only stated the obvious. People are just taking it personally.

I guess the best thing for now is to drop the subject. It's not like this discussion will have any bearing on how Exum turns out.

I guarantee you the "obvious" truth about Exum is not what he's saying. There's a lot of filling in of the gaps.

What of the things I've said about Exum specifically you disagree with? I'm stating what he is now(catch and shoot player who is one of the most passive rookies I've ever seen) and I really have no idea how anyone can dispute that. I am not saying he can't change that, I am not saying he can't turn up the aggression in the following seasons and turn into more of a threat in the paint and as a playmaker.
