Stupid Pet Peeves

I had to be at a meeting this morning, which was in a city about an hour or so from my house. I left an hour and a half before the meeting started. Because of a car accident on the freeway, it took me 25 minutes to get to the next freeway exit after I had entered. I called the coworker I was supposed to pick up on the way to let her know that I would be 10-15 minutes later than when I had told her I would arrive. My coworker was completely freaked out that we were going to be late and was frantically checking her phone GPS the entire time. We arrived at the meeting 5 minutes early (there might have been mild speeding involved), and I was ready to strangle her.

So my wife listed our old POS wooden swing set for free on Facebook marketplace. People were supposed to show up a little after 8:30 with a truck and a trailer. That’s when they texted saying they were just leaving to pick up the trailer. Then they couldn’t find the right hitch and had to go buy one. They finally show up at 10:00 pm. A guy, his wife, and his 82 year old grandfather. No tools. I get stuck having to dig my tools out of my truck (he backed the trailer up my driveway, blocking my truck in the garage so I’m literally crawling around in my truck to dig the right tools out) and helping him carry this damn thing out.
My wife wonders why I don’t like people.

I mean, they kind of did you a favor too.

They did me a favor by showing up 1.5 hours late and making me disassemble and carry out their free swing set?
They took me away from working on a bid that’s due first thing Monday morning. I will literally have zero time to work on it Saturday. They kept me up an hour later than I was going to be (I have to leave my house before 7:00 am for my oldest daughter’s soccer game in Perry, an hour away, this morning).
It’s a wood swing set. I would have simply cut it up and burned it in our fire pit this summer. The rest would have gone in the dumpster. That would have taken about the same amount of time, but it would have at my convenience.

Let me give some advice. If you’re going to take something being offered by someone else for free, show up on time with tools and enough man power.

If I were giving away a POS swing set, I'd probably be giving it away knowing that it's either going to be work for me and it's an eye sore/burden.

Did you communicate with the family that showed up and set clear expectations? Did you tell them to bring tools, that they would have to disassemble it and move it on their own? Did you tell them you were working on a bid and set a time deadline?

If you did, then you had plenty of opportunities to call off the move last night. If you didn't set these expectations, one advice I'd give you is never assume or have expectations when selling something online/giving it away. I always try and assume they don't know, or won't do, or have a different expectation unless I make it clear.

I just gave away a bed last week. I made sure they knew a time frame and if they weren't there by then, we'd be leaving for dinner. I told them I took it apart but would not be able to carry it because of my back. I told them it was heavy and they needed at least two, strong people to carry it. I told them to bring a truck. Lol Ultimately, it was free, but they did a lot of work I would have done if they didn't get it. I'd imagine cutting up your swing set, burning it and dumping wouldn't have been fun either. On the positive side, just be glad it's gone and that **** isn't in your yard anymore.

You have a big heart, dude. While you may hate people, you're going to help people when you can, or put others first - even if you bah humbug about it afterwards.

I remember when my brother died, you and Trout called me to check in on me and to see if there was anything you could do for me, even though we hardly knew eachother. That's something I'll never forget. I'm not sure how grateful the people were last night for your help and swingset give-a-way (some people are oblivious) but I can guarantee you made some kid happy - up until he/she breaks their arm on that damn thing.

Lastly, this is water. This is water.

Why give it away for free? Should’ve listed that **** for $. You have a clan to support.

If no one bid on it, then change it to free. It’s what I would’ve done anyway as three in daycare blows.

It was literally falling apart. And my wife did 100% of the listing and communicating with the people. I want nothing to do with that ****. I just want someone to respect me, my time, and my efforts.

On a sort of related note, a pet peeve of mine is when I show up to help someone move their stuff into a moving van, like in a church service project, and they don't even have their things packed in boxes yet. It seems like they are not respecting the time of those kind enough to volunteer to help.

When people say "Of course" in response to me saying "thank you," instead of "you're welcome." Seems to be more and more common, in Utah at least.

I read a whole treatise on saying thank you, that many of the ways we say you're welcome are really self-serving and have an underlying tone of putting one above the other person. I always just try to say "you're welcome", KISS.

Customers who purposefully leave incorrect addresses with later instructions to deliver elsewhere.

I've been delivering food in my spare time. I don't need the money but bet your *** it's about the money. There's a thrill in gaming the app to maximize earnings, plus more $$ is always cool. When I recieve an order I quickly have to weigh costs, opportunity cost, and opportunity benefit (such as location close to restaurant so I'm likely to get another easy delivery right after, potential to recieve stacked orders, ending location, etc). My decision to accept is based on these things and when you put an incorrect address in it messes up the calculation, and ads a ton of wasted time with customer support to fix it. If you do this you are an awful human being. I don't need the money but if you mess with someone's livelihood who does, I hope they **** in your food.

Sometimes headlines are confusing.

"Student Slain While Attacking Gunman Gets Hero's Sendoff"

I read that at first as the student was slain and the gunman got a hero's sendoff.

That would be appropriate.

"Ah. Say no more. I, too, have had students."

when someone serving you is giving you change and they just put it on the counter instead of in your hand that is open waiting to receive it ..... ffs that does my head in

Why would anyone want to touch your slimy rapists paws? No job is worth that.
