2011 draft.....

This is first time I have seen footage of Valaciunas. Here is what I took away from the video.

He is a very mobile 7 footer. He has good big-man fundamentals. Catches the ball high and finishes high. Appears to be well coached-- moving to the right open areas to balance floor. Appears to have good hands and coordination. He picked up lose balls and was instantly ready to score around the hoop.

He doesn't look to block shots as much as he cut people and forced them to shoot over him.

Physically he resembles Pau Gasol with a less developed left hand. He obviously doesn't have Pau's level of skill. But he could become a poor man's Pau. His defense skills appear to be ahead of his offensive skills.

I like him a lot better than I did before.

Anderson Varajeo seems like a similar player as well.

Here are some highlights of him in Euroleague.

He doesn't near as quick or coordinated in this video.

He is playing against men and is overpowered several times. His offensive game is very raw.

He has 3 main good points.

He is really tall and long. He can catch the ball. He works hard on defense and pursues rebounds. I don't know if that is enough for our picks.

Biyombo is a lock at #3 on my draft board, and I don't see that changing. As NUMBERICA stated, it is a total bonus that he can play in Europe next season if needed.

Memo's expiring contract could be worth a lot more than expiring contracts were worth last season; there could be a handful of teams desperate to cut their payrolls. I can't see why we would put him on the floor again.

I'd still pass on this weak euro.

I'd rather take an athletic banger, like Biyombo. Or one of the many wings, Jones, Leonard, etc. We don't need to draft a guy that in 2-3 years might come over and become the next Anderson Varejao... That's what we have Tomic for.

Lets get something a little more proven... Or hell, just something that weighs 200 lbs. Expecting to come and play in the NBA at 6'11" with the size and strength of these euros is nothing more than a pipedream (Damn! Donatas is 7 feet 215. Dude makes AK look like Karl Malone. If we had Deron still that would mean our PG weighed about as much as our center!).

The NBA is a man's league. Time for some of these kids to hit the weight room.

A player that you could project Biyombo to be more realistically would be Kendrick Perkins. While I think we all hope he's Amare Stoudemire and Ben Wallace at the same time, I think getting a young, healthy Perkins is pretty ****ing nice, too.

Good point.

Also some good points about Memo's PT. time to rep you...

Perkins is thick/heavy and struggled for playing time due to conditioning early in his career...that's hardly Bimbo. From a very strong defender/weak offensive player, sure, but that's about it. Ibaka seems like a better comparison, no?

I sure hope your right about Memo's contract being worth a lot!

So for me, the top 4, without a doubt at this point, are Irving, Williams, Kanter/Bimbo...after that, all these euros can go suck it. I'd go with Knight, Jones, or someone else who's athletic and has a baller mentality.

I think one needs to really evaluate some of these euros' toughness and "thug" mentality.

Just look at what Perkins has done to the Thunder.

Just look at how much we're missing toughness at virtually every position. We need some thug on this roster.

Aren't we all tired of the defenseless Jazz? Of people driving the lane like it's a freeway? Without fear of taking a hit? How often have we waltzed into opposing cities to only play lackadaisical and sleep walk through a pounding?

Some of these euros might have nice shooting strokes, but do any of them have mean streaks? How competitive are these guys? How will they react when the chips are down? The NBA is much more of a street fight than a euro 3 point shooting contest.

With the case of the Jazz, I think KOC needs to not only look at upgrading the athleticism and size of this team, but he needs to also rebuild the attitude of this leaderless team. Right now we shouldn't look for complimentary pieces that can rise up to the play of longtime hardasses Karl Malone and John Stockton.

In fact, just the opposite, we need to find some hardasses. Because quite honestly, the soft weak play of Al, Fess, AK, CJ, etc just isn't going to cut it. Raja is tough and mean, but sucks royally. Millsap is tough, but not mean. Favors seems pretty reserved and Hayward still looks like a boy (although the sorta beard is a nice start to becoming a hard a).

Right now, a young Raja Bell, CP3 (dude is carrying the Hornets), Tony Allen, Shane Battier, Kurt Thomas, or Perkins or Rodman would be a lot more valuable to this tissue soft team than a talented scoring softie, like Pau Gasol.

If Memo's playing 20 MPG, that means Millsap, Jefferson, and Favors will be playing about 25 MPG. That is pure garbage.

No matter what minute allocations you want to put on it, we're not going to have a 3 man rotation at the bigs next year. There's going to be a 4th guy.

A 20 minute average does not mean 20 minutes every single night. It could be 30 minutes one night if he's rolling or other guys get into foul trouble. It can mean 10 on nights when the other 3 are all playing well. I would suspect early on his minutes will be very limited so he can ease back in. But it's pretty indisputable Memo would be one of the best 4th bigs on any team in the league. It's an advantage we should be exploiting.

That all depends on how "healthy" Memo will look/play. If he ends up closer to how he played before the injury, he'll have some positive trade value. If he ends up closer to how he played this past season, he's nowhere near "one of the best 4th bigs on any team in the league", and probably has value only as an expiring contract. If there's anyone out there willing to gamble on Memo for cap relief/pick(s), you take it and run.
