2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

I’d be willing to throw in a first round pick to LAC and I hope we don’t take the same stupid perspectives on the draft going forward. The powder needs to be lit now as Rudy is peaking and we need to put some **** together. I don’t care about bites at the apple.

Also, if we could land Gallo then sign Brogdan then we’d be set. Maybe get another bench shooter. Brogdon is 53/54 from the line.

It’d also be nice to always have one of Brogdon, Gallo, or Korver on the floor to not be missing any freebie techs.

I would much prefer Gallo, but he’s played his way out of our range. I think when all is said and done, the only way we can add offense is Jabari, unless WAS is blowing it up and we view Otto Porter as the next guy for a Tobias Harris jump.
Yeah, this season sucks more and more because most of our ideal midseason or summer targets look less and less likely.

I have changed my position on a few things:

No to Hardaway - injury concern and contract.

No to Gallo - injury concern and we need a guy to create buckets not just a stretch 4. If he came super cheap, then sure but he ain't gonna come or stay for cheap.

No to Fultz - gamble not worth taking

No on Jabari... just no... in a trade anyway.

I'm still not sure Gallo has improved his trade equity so much that a team would pony up expiring salary and a pick or other substantial asset. He's one injury away from being back to a trade negative. They can probably figure it out capwise still.... but it'd be tricky if two max guys wanted to come.

There are basically no teams willing to take on future money (at least that is what is being reported) for good players. If you want to dump bad players for draft picks Cleveland is holding on line 1. The Kings would be a natural fit to do this, but Vlade said they won't do anything that compromises their cap space next year. They can always change their mind, I think they'd be more into Porter than Gallo. I could see Dallas taking a flier on Gallo... but they won't offer a first (they really can't until 2021 anyway). Would they throw DS Jr. to make it work? They also have Barnes as the small ball PF and I think they'd prefer younger options.

So what teams have expiring contracts, no big salary needs that will throw them into LT, a positional need, are in win now mode, and would offer draft or prospects to grease the wheels? Not many imo... if Philly has given up on cap space aspirations maybe they'd do it... Portland? maybe... salary matching is hard. San Antonio? Maybe but salary matching would be hard. NOP could be the one if they can flip Niko for some draft asset (and expirings) and bring Gallo in. They'd be in a bind if AD wanted to re-sign Randle (AD is their new GM until he demands a trade).

I think we are in a position of strength with our expirings if we are willing to use them on good players now... I think we are in a much worse position if we wait until FA to do our work.

LACs may wait and figure they can get off of Gallo's deal this offseason with no issues if Kawhi and Kyrie say yes, but if they did make him available I think we'd be in a solid position.

Gallo does create though... he's not a Ryan Anderson type. He's basically perfect if he's healthy. I have age/injury concerns but he's basically exactly what we need on offense.

The Clips will likely wait and not trade Gallo unless they get big signs that they are getting two of their targets. They can clear enough room with Harris' cap hold and Gallo to sign Kawhi outright... So Gallo for straight expirings is a pipe dream unless they are worried and I almost think they'd have to start losing a lot.... which isn't likely.

OP Jr. for expirings is a possibility still... his knee injury is troubling though... the infamous bone bruise. He's missed like 8-10 games.

I like Gallo, but what we would have do trade to make the numbers work makes it pretty much a lateral move in my opinion. Gallo makes us better than Favors probably, but how much better?

A lot better.

He's played like a top ten offensive player... and he's okay on defense. His shooting may be a bit better than can be expected, but he takes a lot of threes and gets a lot of FTs and makes them count. Its a rare combination of 3PA and FTAR and when the threes are falling it's an offensive cheat code.... he is so much more than just a spot up guy.

On another note, a year and a half ago we traded up to draft a guy who plays only one position, and it’s the position of our best player. Not to mention that we’re already playing one of our better guys out of position because he can’t get enough minutes at his natural position because our best player plays that position. Plus we also have the best defender in the world who can’t sniff anything more than occasional garbage time. So we’ve got this guy who’s played 28 total NBA minutes. We’re a third of the way through the season, and he’s yet to log a single damn minute this year.

Also... wanted to mention... Thomas Bryant who was selected with the pick we used to move up is starting for the Wiz and averaging 17/10/1.2 per36 on shooting spits of 66/27/83. That's basically what Tony does in the G League, but on worse shooting.

He's six months older than Tony... so basically the same age. 6'11" 7' 6" height and wingspan. So slightly bigger than Tony.

I bring this up just to re-iterate my issue with the pick and the process behind the pick... bigs like Tony are abundantly available. The pick isn't that big of a deal imo... but everything around it was so weird.

Not to mention passing on Josh Hart.

Absolute garbage move.
