2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

We can outbid unless they through Dennis Smith into the deal.

I would be shocked if the Mavs did that. Smith is on a rookie contract and will be a RFA when it ends. He's shooting almost 40% from three and 45% from the field. He's a better defender than predicted also.

What's funny is Washington isn't even that far out of the playoffs.

But some team will come in with more valuable picks and players with better reps then Exum. Agree on favors.

I think the lakers would throw Ingram in a Beal deal... I like him a lot. Everything in LA centers on if they think they can get AD though so I doubt they go that route.

Beal is a guy that fits almost anywhere... and is on the young side of his prime. If he gets moved they should get a premium... but wiz gonna wiz so they probably keep trying to win 45 games a year and being a “dangerous” playoff team.

I think they can duck the tax this year by trading Ariza for less salary and trading satoransky for no returning salary. They would have to know the playoffs aren’t happening though. I think Satoransky is a low key good addition for us if we could do it.

If NO took a re-building type deal for AD and Holiday became available I think that is the best case scenario for a gettable trade target.

NO almost surely doesn't trade AD... if they do it will likely be for different win now assets and not a re-build package... but its worth keeping an eye on.

If Conley became available I'd be intrigued, but scared... contract, age, lingering injury concerns. As a fit he'd be fantastic though.

Kemba is worth monitoring. I think they miss the playoffs... Lamb and Zeller now out and they got pounded by Dallas at home. I think they still go all in to retain Kemba but they may be willing to offload a draft pick to move salary because their salary situation next year is bananas if they retain Kemba. No way they write that check.

I think Jae/Thabo/Royce can give us enough of the stretch 4 stuff we need so I'm a little less concerned about that "need". There may be better budget options there.

Much of this trade discussion is flawed because it is focusing on the Jazz as buyers, trying to fill in the roster around star players, as if the Jazz are ready to contend now. However, to be a contender you need to have either: A) 1 super-star + 1 star, or B) 3 stars. Unfortunately, the Jazz don't have the star power to contend yet. So, until either: A) Donovan develops into a super-star, or B) the Jazz acquire another potential star player, the front office should be in asset accumulation and development mode (i.e., sellers).

So, unless the Jazz think there is a player they can acquire now who will be a star for them, they should focus on trading players on the roster for 1st rounders, players on rookie contracts, or vet players they can rehab into an asset (like Jazz have done with Crowder). For example, I bet we could get a 1st rounder or interesting young player for Crowder (looking at Houston or Wolves). Also, I would reach out to teams that are trying to compete now (e.g., LA, OKC, Portland, New Orleans) to see what they would give for Ingles (Ball or Hart?). Phoenix still needs a PG, let's send them Rubio or Neto. Get Favors to the Wizards for either OPJ or a 1st.

I believe that trades focused on building a supporting roster for this year is what DL would refer to as "skipping steps".

Nah, the Jazz are absolutely in win now mode. They still believe in this roster and believe that once the schedule eases up we can start climbing in the standings. Why do you think we traded AB and two 2nd round picks for a guy that's going to turn 38 in two months?

The more teams that hoard cap space the less valuable our space becomes. If a trade came along that ate into that space and provided something good I think there is more value there.

Like if the Hornets want to retain Kemba they trade Marvin and a first for Favs. I think Marvin is a good fit and the draft is where Utah has to get stars imo. OP jr. and Gallo would be other examples, but I think LA risks it on Gallo and moves him this summer if they need to.

We might have considered carving space last year instead and playing in a "team" friendly market. Next summer gonna be some Deng and Noah deals handed out.

I admit that does seem like a win now move. But maybe they think Korver has more value going forward that AB + 2 seconds. Alternatively, maybe they were keeping the roster ready incase another star player became available during the trade deadline. Whatever the reasoning, I still think if they are trying to win a championship, they should not be in contending mode. I mean, does anyone really think they can contend this year with Gobert and Mitchell as the best players?

Of course the reality is they running a business, so they are not trying to win a championship, but trying to maximize profits over the next several year (i.e., field a team that will win enough to sell out the jacked up season tickets). How depressing.

This is why we should look to gain assets using our expirings. I don't agree with everything @checkbookdoc just said about selling players for assets, but I do think we have to capitalize on the market. If we can make a deal which sacrifices some 2019 cap room BUT gives us either a player or a good asset, I think we should do it.

Like @Jack Strop said, I have very little faith in our ability to sign somebody good this summer.

It would never happen, for obvious reasons, but I'd take Hayward back if Boston ever decided to salary dump him.

Nah, Jazz should keep the cap-space.

Utah is going to land good free agents. Maybe they don't get the Harris or Middleton, but maybe they are able to get this era's Boozer/Okur.
