2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

But what about Blake Griffin?

Anyone see that postgame clip yesterday. He obviously wants to be on a team that takes winning more seriously. And talk about your 25+PPG threat, and the fit is great.
Would LOVE to get Griffin. Probably over all the other guys discussed.

Was going to post something similar to LoPo. Clearing cap space for a 2nd tier FA like Tobias (and he's my target - with Klay, erc. being unrealistic), requires renouncing Favs, Rubio and others. Then the Jazz don't even have the full MLE to fill out the roster. I think they'd have the smaller exception which is what, around $4.5M? That's not much to find a backup 5 and a PG.

I think the play here is to try to make a trade with Favors and the draft pick. Then the Jazz could still keep Rubio and/or have the full MLE.

I think they paid Dante for a reason. I bet you could get a pretty damn good backup PG for 4-5 million a year, but maybe that’s a stretch.

It's not much, but those are the two positions in the league that would be easiest to get finds in the bargain bin.

I understand your logic, but I have to disagree.

To play in free agency this summer, we have to renounce Rubio and Favors. So even if we got Tobias, we would lose two good contributors without the financial ability to add another great piece (we would only have the $4.6 million room exception since we would be a below cap team to start free agency). If we make a trade now, we still have the rights of Rubio or Favors, can spend the money to keep them AND we would have the $9 million MLE exception to add even more. So put it this way:

WAIT FOR FREE AGENCY - Maybe add a player but lose Rubio and Favors. After adding the player, we can use $4.6 million room exception. Tobias+$4.6 million player

TRADE NOW - Add a player, keep Rubio or Favors AND have a $9 million MLE exception to use. Otto+Rubio+$9 million player

We probably lose favors and Rubio in these trade scenarios anyway. We aren't getting Conley, Harris or whoever for free right? Plus we probably have to add a pick or Exum or something .
I don't think the clippers get super excited about thabo and Bradley.
I don't know how minutes would work with favors, Crowder, and Harris as trying to play the 4.

Favors is in a perfect situation here, although paid a little too much for his role. He has been playing fewer minutes but he has remained healthy. If he was to go 30 plus a night I'd be willing to wager his knee and back would give him fits. I wish we could keep him in a back up role beyond next year at a discount and with the understanding he will come off the bench. Reality probably won't fit into the conversation but teams looking to trade for him or pick him up if we decline his option will look into his past history. He's just not capable of playing center for 30 plus minutes a night and staying healthy.

You can trade in the offseason, and a S&T typically doesn't make sense anymore, but could make sense for the Jazz (and obviously would make sense for the team who would lose their player for nothing) in order to keep Rubio or Faves. Like for example if the Clippers landed one star, Tobias wants to sign with us, we could work a sign and trade in which the Clippers got Faves, and depending on the date, could waive him or pick up his option for one more year and keep their 2020 cap space open for maybe another star?

Trading now limits the Jazz options... that's why it would only make sense to trade if it's a favorable deal (aka ONLY Faves and Sef for Otto, no asset) since there are other options like trying to land a player in FA.

Really, really tough to pull that off because we would have to renounce players to have the space to trade into AND I don't think we can trade Favors for a while after picking up his option.

Because the money? Jazz would probably have to sign Rubio before in that hypothetical scenario to get that massive cap hold down.

Otto is a valuable player, but I don't believe Jazz should have to give up an asset (other than Faves who would honestly make them a better team) for his contract.

I think to do the sign and trade we'd have to pick up or guarantee Favs contract... don't think salaries count until the option is picked up.

I think we should focus on trading for the PF and not use Rubio. Once we have the PF, we can pay to keep Rubio this summer. We don't necessarily have to use Exum, but we will if we feel like we have to. I've been saying for a while that we don't need Rubio AND Exum. In terms of trade value, I think Exum has more. In terms of "to the team value", I think Rubio has more.

The minutes will filter down nicely. Let's just say Exum and Favors are used for a guy like Porter or Harris. Exum and Favors are playing around 40 minutes per game combined. If Harris or Porter comes in and gets 32, that's fine because some of Exum's PG minutes go to Donovan, some of Donovan's SG minutes go to Royce, some of Royce's SF minutes go to Korver and Crowder and some of Favors' C minutes go to Udoh.

The biggest issue in trading Favors is our backup C spot, but I think the improvements made to the 36 minutes Gobert plays will easily make up for the 12 minutes we are missing Favors as a backup C.
