2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

I could see NOLA or Houston liking Oubre. Why wouldn't they? Both teams are capped out and need a wing but they could keep him since he's a restricted free agent.

Washington trades Oubre and Rivers and gets Ariza.

Phoenix trades Ariza and gets Rivers and Exum.

NOLA trades Niko and gets Oubre.

Jazz trade Exum and get Niko.

I like it, but here are issues I see with it:

#1 - I don't think Washington and Phoenix can wait until January 15 (when Exum is available to be traded).

#2 - I think Niko is pretty happy in NOLA and NOLA is pretty happy with him. I could see NOLA trying to use an exception to acquire Oubre.

if we trade for him we have to guarantee his contract for next year(the situation is similar to Mirotic last year), which means we have to punt on the high end FA this coming summer.

And for the record - yes, Jabari is indeed as bad as his numbers suggest he is, especially on defense.

You don’t have to guarantee his deal. That was what Niko wanted and he could have blocked the trade because of bird rights stuff... Favs can do the same to us. Not sure if Jabari could donthat but it would be in his best interest to go somewhere he can play.

Mirotic and Jabari's contracts are the same(just different numbers) - they are 1 year contracts + 1 year team option. Favors' contract is different. It's 2 years contract with the second year non-guaranteed. The reason Jabari(and Mirotic last year) have the right to veto is because players have the right to veto trades during a 1 year contract. Favors cannot do that because technically his contract is 2 years, not 1... just the second year is not guaranteed(another stroke of genius from DL).

I guess it depends on how much the Jazz want Jabari... because he has the leverage. If we want him now and if we are willing to pay for him something of value he will know he has leverage and he will want his contract guaranteed. It's a bit of a game of who blinks first... Jabari doesn't have as much leverage as Mirotic had last year because he's not playing as good. But he still loses if he agrees to transfer his option year. It's a no-win situation for him contract-wise... so he might just stick with it and hope some other team will be willing to guarantee the contract.

I thought he just signed a 2 year deal last summer
1 year guaranteed, 2nd year is a team option (kinda like Favors).

I was just told the second year becomes guaranteed if traded, but the comparison of Niko was used, and that wasn’t actually in Niko’s contract so I am skeptical but have not researched this aspect further.

It doesn't become guaranteed automatically, but the player can veto trades until the contract is guaranteed because right now his contract is 1 year and if it gets guaranteed it becomes 2 years. Players have the right to veto any trade during a 1 year contract because they lose their bird rights this way. This is what Mirotic did last year. He was blocking the trade until Chicago picked his option for the following year.

So is it possible that Jabari still accepts a trade but not demand that the 2nd year is picked up? So if he is intent on leaving, he could still give his new team the team option on year 2?

It's possible. But it doesn't make sense contractually for him. If he knows a team is willing to give up value for him he knows he has leverage and he will likely want the contract guaranteed. Unless... the team doesn't give up any/much value for him.

So in the aftermath of the Suns/Wiz trade, here seem to be the most pressing trade deadline topics:

Jabari Parker - seems like he will be traded before January if Chicago and Jabari want to avoid distractions

Caldwell-Pope - supposedly he wants to be traded asap. Every day that goes by he loses $10,000 from his trade kicker.

Fultz - the guy still has a month at least before he sees the court. Detroit and Orlando seem like the most logical fits.

Rockets - still in the market for a wing

Pelicans - still in the market for improvements

Hornets - still in the market for improvements

I think you are wrong on the favors thing but am too lazy to look it up.

Why would Jabari block any trade to a team that would play him? He’s out of the rotation... if he stays there they aren’t picking it up and his value will continue to be nothing if he doesn’t play. If he threatened to block it any team will be completely out... I’m not sure he’s the brightest most self aware guy but I think he’s be smart enough to connect those dots.
