Yep. People think he was a great individual defender because of his stocks but teams regularly targeted him one on one in college. They will do it even more in the nba.Sheppard will definitely be a defensive weak link individually.

I think you are being a bit reactionary to the magic having a bad couple playoff games and Black currently not playing. He showed some nice flashes this year and think his future is pretty bright.Magic is a great example of why focusing on just BPA isnt always such a great plan.
Had they traded down, let us get Black and then drafted Wallace or Hendricks at #9, I think one of those two could already be playing a significant role for them in these playoffs and would be a better long term fit with the others.
Sheppard could ironically be the player with the best career in this draft. Lots of average players throughout
Agreed. IMO you draft for fit only when you are on the verge of contention. And we are so far away right now. We should be getting the best talent we can find. The best talent that could be part of the next contending Jazz team.We only have one guy who we know for sure is a starter, but he can play with literally anyone and he might be gone anyways. Drafting for fit would be stupid. If we happen to have to players who are both good enough that overlap matters...what a nice problem to have. Only got to worry about this is if there isn't a path to playing time/development resources.
There are times when fit drives things. Big believer in draft tiers. If you have a good non-shooting center and have two guys in a tier available and one is a non-shooting center... maybe opt for the other guy. Position/fit/future flexibility should be a tie breaker of sorts.Agreed. IMO you draft for fit only when you are on the verge of contention. And we are so far away right now. Shep & Black. I’d be on board for it. But trading Key this early would be risky. I think I'd do it though.Reed Sheppard is my guy in this draft. If the Jazz are in position to draft him does anyone think the Magic would consider a Key for Black type deal? I've never seen a worse 3 point shooting team in the playoffs than the Magic. Some are comparing Castle to Black so why not just acquire Black who seems very redundant with Suggs in Orlando? A backcourt rotation of Shep, Black, Sexton, Dunn and a sprinkle of Brice could be a well balanced unit.
Unless we take Clingan I doubt any player we take in the draft is going to cause a trade of a current player. Even then you need 48 minutes. See which dude is better and then move the other if you want some variation.Shep & Black. I’d be on board for it. But trading Key this early would be risky. I think I'd do it though.

How many of the NBA starting point guards are not weak defensively and not targeted? Brunson, Young, Curry, Lillard, Conley... Unless the player is small/bad defender even compared to other PGs then being a defensive weak link individually is not an issue.Sheppard will definitely be a defensive weak link individually.
That's the truth for the most part. It's still an issue. How many of the NBA starting point guards are not weak defensively and not targeted? Brunson, Young, Curry, Lillard, Conley...
