Aaron Gordon to Utah Jazz - Chad Ford

"Aaron Gordon is the Russell Westbrook of this draft"

Troof.

It's gotta be Gordon at #5 or Wiggins/Parker if we move up.
I'd settle for him being the Dwayne Wade of this draft. Everyone looks as Wade and sees his success, but forget that the 2003 draft was a 3 player draft. LeBron, Darko and Carmello were all going to be stars. That was it. Toronto was pretty settled into getting Bosh with the fourth pick, but nobody knew what Miami was going to do at 5. They were projected to take Chris Kaman by many and most people had Wade going to Chicago at 7. Pat Riley wanted a star, did his homework and took the guy that he felt stood out the most. That's how Wade ended up in Miami. It wasn't anywhere close to a forgone conclusion that he'd be a top 5 pick.

To be perfectly honest, it really seems to mirror this draft a lot. With Embiid out, most people are sold on Wiggins (LeBron) and Parker (Carmello) going 1 and 2. Dante Exum has quickly risen into that unknown international man of mystery role (Darko) and either Embiid or Vonleh will likely get drafted early based on their size and potential (Bosh). The guy left over who has always stood out to me as having the highest chance of reaching his potential is Aaron Gordon. I like pretty much everything about him except for where his shooting currently is at. I do think that he can (and will) improve in this area. I think he's a special player.

If they don't trade up for Wiggins/Parker, then Gordon is the guy I hope they pick.

Why is Smart a bad fit for the Jazz? Our biggest weaknesses are toughness and perimeter defense. Smart has those attributes.

(And let me anticipate any response that includes "character issues": most of those are dramatically over-stated; all of his coaches talk about his work ethic, etc.)

Just to play Devil's advocate, because none of us truly have an idea whether the kid works hard or not, a college coach is going to say that 99 times out of 100. As soon as a collegiate coach starts knocking his exiting players who are trying to make cash money and make a living is the day he stops getting recruits.

what about when his Team USA coach goes off-script in order to compliment him?

By the way, I'm almost on board with Gordon at 5. Vonleh is just too pedestrian for me.

If Wiggins, Parker, and Exum all go the top 3, I pray Vonleh goes 4th, leaving us the choice of Gordon or Embiid. A monumental risk I know, but Embiid may be worth it there.
