Orlando matched him because they knew how valuable a C with a very nice physical profile and can rebound and defend is. They didn't need him, but they knew they could probably use him as an asset to get what they really wanted (good value if looking at his size and efficiency, salary taking up enough space to take back another star when the opportunity presented itself [this?]).
Right now, they're a team that frankly has no one that's great with the ball in their hands and certainly have no offense that generates itself in the post even though they're loaded with players that can give a guy a prairie to work within if he's worthy. Boozer on Orlando from a skill standpoint is almost perfect. Considering Koufos right now is our only likely center for half the season, getting Gortat would be a god-send (why the Jazz just didn't draft Aldrich, I don't know, maybe the Jazz and Magic have been talking about this for a while and the Jazz thought they were going to get Gortat).
