BYU Fires DC Jaime Hill

PROVO — Jaime Hill, BYU's defensive coordinator and secondary coach stepped down on Saturday following BYU's loss to Utah State on Friday, giving the Cougars a 1-4 start to BYU's season, the worst start since 1973.

Hill, who was named BYU's defensive coordinator in 2008, came to BYU in 2006 with the departure of Brian Mitchell to Texas Tech. He worked as the secondary coach before being elevated to coordinator. Hill confirmed his dismissal on Saturday.

It is uncertain if head coach Bronco Mendenhall has made any other personnel moves over the weekend. An official press release from BYU is expected this weekend. On his post-game radio show on KSL Friday night, Mendenhall said he supported decisions his coaches had made in play-calling and trying to learn about the team and do what was right for the squad.

Hill was given the choice to resign or be fired, according to sources.

The Cougars have struggled both defensively and offensively this season, ranking among the nation's poorest rush defenses, scoring offenses and passing efficiency offenses.

The Cougars face San Diego State next Saturday in LaVell Edwards Stadium. Hill is a native of San Diego. Mendenhall worked as both head coach and defensive coordinator before hiring Hill.

Hill came to BYU from the Ottawa Renegades of the CFL. He worked with the Calgary Stampeders as secondary coach in 2003 and was the defensive coordinator at Humboldt State in 2001. He played football at Grossmont College and San Francisco State.

Is Hill responsible for BYU's complete lack of athleticism and skill on defense?

Completely? No. Does he share responsibility in the defense's lack of athleticism and skill on defense? Absolutely. He's the defensive coordinator. It's his job (along w/Bronco's) to recruit athletes to fit his defense. It's his job to teach the skills that he wants. It's his job to rotate the players necessary to win. It's his job to coach that defensive unit his scheme to be successful.

Personally, I think Anae or Doman could be next. But at least Anae has a history of pretty decent (not great) offense hence the longer leash. Hill? I've just never been impressed.

I thought this might be coming. There was no way the team could be this bad and not have changes made.
As far as other coaches, I don't think Doman has anything to worry about. He's just a position coach. If I were Robert Anae, I would be updating my resume.

Considering that BYU is dead last in rush defense I don't think the Hill "resignation" was all that surprising.

Yup, I'm certain that I just popped a Woodrow Wilson. Classy that they let him resign instead of just firing him.

I was interested to see that you thought Bronco handled the situation with Anae correctly. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I was wondering how most BYU fans felt about it. Too me it seemed like Bronco and the school tripped over themselves to avoid looking like the bad guys. Guys get let go in that business all the time, it's just the nature of the beast. I really don't know how much face they let Anae save considering that everybody who follows this stuff knows he was forced out. Is the end result any different than if BYU had just thanked Anae for what he has helped them accomplish and then sent him on his way? I think not.

I don't think it makes a difference with how fans perceive the situation, but it may well make a difference in his future job interviews. It's probably a lot easier to explain the situation and end by saying, "and so I decided to part ways with BYU", than it would be to end by saying, "and so they fired me".

Stoked. Have full confidence in Doman. You never know but I like his chances. And if they fill out the staff like we've heard the future is even brighter than I thought before.

Pretty much what Colton said. Also, he can't file for unemployment now since he wasn't fired. +1 for the tax payer.

Anae is not going to have a problem finding a job - there are already rumors that ACC schools are interested in him. He's probably better than 75% of OC's out there, he's just not particularly creative enough for a place like BYU and doesn't have the recruiting pull needed. One of those schools that plays smash mouth football, has a large local area talent base, and prides themselves on defense will be lucky to have him.

Doman in as OC. Woot!

You BYU fans are so funny. You're so excited to see Anae gone in favor of a kid who's never been an OC and who's going to run basically the same offense as Anae did (according to BYU "insider" Hans Olsen). Listening to him on the radio, he said basically nothing will change from an X's and O's standpoint. Granted, I understand that Doman is a better recruiter and from all reports he relates better to the players at BYU.

I'm not saying Doman won't succeed as OC. He's pretty much succeeded at anything he's done in regards to football. I just don't know how some can act as if it's a certain upgrade considering what Anae did during his tenure at BYU. John Beck, Max Hall (BYU's all-time leader in wins) and Harvey Unga (BYU's all-time leading rusher) flourished under him and IMO BYU maybe had some of the most amazing TE play in their history during that time.

No matter how good Doman ends up being, he's going to have one hell of a time matching many of Anae's accomplishments while at BYU.

Hi, nice to meet you.
I am not necessarily glad to see Anae gone, as I am glad for a change... and I think Doman will be a good change.
I hope he uses the same offense, or most of it... but I hope he uses it better, and is able to adjust to the flow of a game based on what is working against any given team.
I was sick of seeing the I formation and knowing it would be a run play (it was nice to see BYU do a pass play out of that formation in the Bowl game).
I am grateful for Anae, and what he brought to the team, but I personally was ready for a change.
I think, and hope it will be a good change with Doman as long as we get some decent offensive coaches in there, and know it is not a certain thing, but is worth the risk. Doman is fiery, and I think we need that fire on offense.

You non-BYU fans are funny.... when you think you know what us BYU fans are thinking and telling us to be grateful for something we are already grateful for.

Perhaps you weren't around this forum all season long when BYU fans were bitching about Anae. I could necro-post them for your benefit but I really don't want to invest the time. However, there was plenty of that going on if you decide you want to look for it. I was also responding to the BYU fan who was "wooting" the fact that Doman was hired as OC, replacing one of the most prolific OC's in BYU history.

It's ok though. I've been around long enough to see the nature of BYU fan. When it's flavor of the month, it's as good as gold and shouldn't be questioned. Gary Crowton was a god to BYU fans during his first 1 and 3/4 seasons with BYU. I couldn't count how many "Undefeated" predictions BYU fans were spewing prior to Crowton's 2nd season. It wasn't long at all before he went from god to a bumbling idiot who had no idea what he was doing. So many BYU fans (not all of them) were in here trying to justify BYU's use of a 2 QB system. Especially after the Washington when. A few weeks later they were up in arms over and wanted somebody's head. That somebody ended up being Anae.

As I said, maybe Doman will be great. Every BYU fan at least thinks so right now. However, if he's not it will be another amusing example of Y fans turning on their own. They do it better than anybody.

I love the generalizations.
Utah fans do the same thing... it's easier to see someone else's "problem", and see ourselves as fair and tolerant.
People talk up, or down, current situations to make themselves feel better.

2 QB's almost never work... and my take was it would not work.
By the way I heard many of the same themes about Utah's QB situation toward the end of the year from Ute fans. Every fan base does the same things, so don't think whatever teams you support fans are any different.

Fans complain, fans cheer. Who cares... let it go.
