BYU to the Big 12 discussion???

Oh man, it sounds like the Big East rumors are indeed real. And even worse, football only too. The positive is that with AQ the road to the BCS doesn't look too hard, certainly easier than other AQ conferences. But I'm not sure this was what I envisioned ending the Independence experiment. That whole laugh/cry dichotomy cliche applies here right now.

BYU has been invited to join the Big East as a football-only member, but, for now, BYU has not accepted the invitation, according to a Washington, D.C. columnist.

BYU "has a conference that desperately wants them for all of the right reasons and have given them every indication that they will acquiesce to their expectations," Williams told the Deseret News. "But is that enough to get them to get their football program to leave independent status? I don't think anybody knows at this point in time.

"At the end of the day, the Big East has done everything to accommodate whatever it is that BYU wanted," Williams added. "But it's really going to be up to the (BYU's) Board of Trustees as to whether or not that's what they want. No matter how well you charm them, or how well you give them whatever they want, it really comes down to whether or not the Board of Trustees feels this is in the best long-term interest of the university. My understanding is that BYU is willing to accept an invitation. It was told to me that if it were up to (athletic director Tom Holmoe ) and (President Cecil O. Samuelson ), they would be in. But it's not. It really is up to whether the Board of Trustees give them the okay."

I thought the quotes in blue were the most interesting. I guess we'll find out soon what the Board of Trustees have to say.

BYU is nuts if they pass this up. Absolutely out of their minds. Easy road to AQ, keep their network, and Sunday play doesn't even have to be addressed?

What is there to even weigh here besides travel (particularly if this BSU/AF/Houston/etc division doesn't happen)?

If the Big East is meeting all of BYU's requests, why is there even a decision to be made? Does the board of trustees seriously want to consider staying independent so their football team can continue to have November's with 2 bye weeks while playing the likes of Idaho and NMSU?

I would feel better if Holmoe had a "Screw that" option.

You know, like if you sent your mission papers into SLC and they told you you're going to be headed to a mission of exile in Siberia, you could say, "Screw that!" and not go. BYU sends in a football prospectus, gets an answer, and has to live with it. Such is life.

Geographically.... Definitely. The Big East is bending over backwards to get them though. At least there is that.

The good news is, we don't agree. What I was saying was that I wish they would just go along with what the paper is saying Holmoe wants, which is the Big East deal. I think it sucks comparatively to not being in the Big 12, but I still say take the deal all things considered, though I retroactively reserve the right to bitch and moan when we find out exactly what is included in the deal. I'm 99% certain they had a Big 12 offer already though, as I've talked to people outside of the Internet realm that would know and they have said as much, so they either rejected it or took too firm of a stance on their counter offers. That's where my disappointment lies.
