BYU to the Big 12 discussion???

Everyone keeps saying TV Market this.. TV Market that.

Let me ask this question...

Is the Boise TV market that much worse than Missouri's, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Washington State, Oregon State, Arizona, ect?
In all honesty, no (and yes).
Let's take a look at population:
Boise, Idaho: The Boise metropolitan area is home to about 616,500 people.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boise,_Idaho
Columbia, Missouri: Columbia Metropolitan Area, a region of 164,283 residents.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia,_Missouri
Oxford Mississippi: As of the 2010 US Census, the population is 14,147.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxford,_Mississippi
Starkville, Mississippi: The population was 23,888 at the 2010 census.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starkville,_Mississippi
Pullman, Washington: 29,799 according to the 2010 census.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pullman,_Washington
Corvallis, Oregon: As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 54,462.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corvallis,_Oregon
Tuscon, Arizona: The 2010 United States Census puts the city's population at 520,116 [2] with a metropolitan area population at 1,020,200.

While the populations don't compare (with the exception of U of A), that isn't giving us 100% of the story. I would wager that the other universities have big followings in other bigger cities they are near-ish. For example: Ole Miss probably has followers in St. Louis, Washington State in Seattle, Oregon State in Portland, etc. There is really nothing close to Boise. The closest big city is probably Salt Lake which already has the Utes and Cougars.

I'm not saying Boise isn't a viable option for the Big 12. It wouldn't surprise me to see them join up either.

Precisely... for those large state schools, it's much more about the population of the STATE, not the population of the town the university is in.

BSU can't have a smaller market than Iowa and Iowa St. Or Nebraska. And that's besides that casual fans can enjoy BSU more than almost any program out there.

Kansas and Kansas St. have to split Kansas city with Mizzou, and after that, K and K st. have to split all of the crappy (and I mean butt-****ed) towns in Kansas.

IMO, the hangup with TCU is simply TV market. I know there are some who don't agree with this, but that's my take on it. The Big 12 already has the Dallas/Ft. Worth market locked up with Texas (although that may have changed with this new Longhorn network not being as available as everybody hoped).
Right, but let's assume the Big 12 has been looking at Houston as I've heard, what conceivable advantage does bringing in Houston have over TCU? The only one I can think of is either the Houston market is somehow not cornered, or the Big 12 would PREFER a cup-cake to a legitimately good program.

I think you are on to something. Houston has been irrelevant in sports for how long now? TCU has at least had a legit football team recently along with some good baseball teams. Maybe they are afraid of bringing a team like TCU into their conference. I think the true culprit of this is Baylor to be honest. They are probably behind the scenes lobbying to keep TCU out of the BIG 12 just as TCU lobbied to keep them out of the MWC last year when it was looking like the BIG 12 would fall apart. TCU still kind of holds a grudge that Baylor was offered an invite to the BIG 12 and they weren't. Here's an article giving a brief explanation. Baylor however may not get their way. They know they need to stabilize the conference and to do that they need new schools. Preferably schools which have been relevant as far as football goes.

That's a very legit argument. There is something to be said about the other Big 12 schools not having to compete with TCU on in-state recruits. If they keep TCU out, they can still play the whole proximity card: "You know, you've been offered by TCU, but they play all the way on the East Coast. But we don't go farther than Salt Lake.

Did the Jackson 5 become the Jackson 5 before there were 5 Jacksons? BYU's got more layers than I wore in the cold yesterday. Last minute is relative to the institution we are talking about.

BYU is going to need those layers because it sounds like they're left out in the cold. Again. As usual.

This was interesting and from the looks of it Little Brother is still just that.

Except that "little brother" as you perceive them to be is in an actual conference. BYU football will be meaningless until they get into a major conference. I am not saying this as a Utah fan, I am saying this as a fan of college football. I have already said that I pull for BYU when they aren't playing Utah. I want both schools to be in a big conference.

I think he meant it in that BYU is a bigger draw than Utah. But agreed that Utah is now in a big-boy conference. BYU's coat tails got substantially lighter.
