I see that as the future line up as well.
I disagree, but I may be wrong. I like the Gobert and Favors combo. I wouldn't mind sacrificing a little offense for some great rim protection defense. I also think both Favors and Gobert's offense will improve. I think Favors already has nice form. I think he can learn to stretch the floor a little. I also think Gobert can improve significantly. He has nice form and is rapidly improving his free throw shooting. I can see him developing a mid range game as well. He strikes me as a smart guy. I think he'll figure it out. They should be having him start shooting some shots now so he can develop it. It can't hurt. If that guy develops an offensive game, he has the potential to be the best center in the league.
I think the idea of Favors and Gobert pairing together sounds like an opportunity you can't pass up without seeing if it can work first. We have to focus on building a great defensive team if we want to win a championship.
The huge problem with Favors/Gobert pairing is not their individual offense(which can be a problem, too), it is the team offense that suffers most - the spacing gets screwed totally. There was a point last night when the Suns refused to guard Gobert anywhere out of 15 feet. They just sagged off him and clogged the paint. I can't stress enough how much of a problem this is. It means that one of our players guards himself out of 15 feet. It means the opponent can double other player in certain situations without having to worry about getting abused for it. It means the opponent can use 1 player to guard 2 people in certain situations around the paint, thus having much easier task of help defense and covering the perimeter. It means that the pick and roll with Gobert becomes obsolete - when Gobert's man just doesn't come up with him to guard him, it means creating less mismatches.
Now imagine you have 2 player of this sort on the court at the same time. Favors is a bit better really, so that's unfair and he will make them regret sagging off him this much, but the point is still valid - we'd have 2 players on the floor who cannot score out of the paint. I simply don't see it as a viable option offensively in the long run.
