I think CJ Miles can improve his shooting if he would just set his feet and square up his shoulders. There are very few players in the NBA that can consistently hit their shot from the outside while falling back on three pointers, come off screens and get off a shot while your body is still floating to the side, and putting up shots that aren't in rhythm. He seems to be consistently rushing his shot and trying to score 10 points with every possession.

This. Shelby, you're usually a great poster but 42% is not fantastic, even for a three point chucker. Hell CJ for his career is above that at 43.3% despite being just 33.9% from beyond the arc.
I'd like to see something along the lines of 44/37.
You are right. CJ should stop rushing his shots. That would help a lot. But he can't square his shoulders because he slings the ball with with his arm, requiring a shoulder twisting motion. The good shooters keep their shoulders square through the shot because they have strong wrist motion, like shooting darts. CJ does not have that so hopes of his real improvement will never come true. He is a liability to the Jazz and it's not fair to the other players to play his so much.

I don't want to defend CJ any more than I already have, but this guy is the definition of a troll.
He posts in one thread, bitching about one thing, and has only provided one (nonviable) alternative: Play Rice (that's not a typo).
Clearly, the Jazz have problems at the 2, but those problems extend way beyond CJ. Raja hasn't shot or defended any better than CJ, and he doesn't have nearly the same ability in transition or initiating the offense. Gordon Hayward has been, well, what many expected he would be (bad).
Beyond those two, you can play Price or Watson as very small 2s (I wouldn't mind seeing Price a bit more, actually), or go big with AK at the 2 (and Sap/Evans at the 3...). This early in the season, it's best not to turn to these strange last options, especially when the Jazz have been winning despite the poor play at the 2. If CJ, Raja or Hayward can improve slowly while the Jazz continue winning, the team will be in much better shape for playing them when the playoffs roll around.

I agree 42 would not be 'fantastic.' Poor choice of words on my part. 42 offset by 40 would be fantastic to my mind. That would mean he's a deep threat missing more shots on drives than he should. The flip side to that is CJ doesn't get many calls to this point. Whether he should or not is another topic (I still think he needs to refine his drive game to get contact rather than trying to twist the ball in around defenders.) But guys who post higher percentages often get lots of missed shots erased in the stats by fouls.
Ray Allen led starting 2's last season at 48 percent. Maggette led starting 3's at 51. The dropoffs amongst starters is steep. I think CJ is going to inch toward 30 minutes averaged by the end of the year as his minutes increase. At 30 minutes, what he needs to average as a shooter depends on trips to the FT line. 42 with lots of free throws is great. If he's not going to get calls, he needs to average closer to 45. But his greatest benefit to the team is shooting close to 40 from distance. If he isn't keeping occupying a defender on the perimeter after the midpoint of the season, then he's much less valuable in the units to close halves and games.

Miles just doesn't attack the rim. Oh, he'll dribble into the key to take a shot, but he avoids contact like he's afraid of cooties. And in jumping sideways or backwards to avoid any contact, he'll miss a close-range shot. And by avoiding contact, he also doesn't get fouled. Players who attack the rim (like Deron, or even AK, for example) get higher shooting percentages and more FTA as a result.

Thats BS. Miles does attack and does go right up the chest of players a lot. He tries to get fancy a lot too but that doesnt mean he doesnt attack sometimes.
